Gentlemen, I was browsing my favorite local map this evening and came across one more abbreviation that I cannot figure out, despite searching for information on 19th century map keys.

In the lower left-hand corner is "SM" with a cross or X. Can anyone figure out what that would be?

EDIT: my wonderful wife was curious what I was doing, so I asked her about "SM" and she said, "Saw Mill.. duh". She's probably right...

The same image also has something in the upper right, near the "GM" for Grist Mill. I think it has a similar cross or X to the SM, but this one seems to say "SS" or "S&". Thoughts on that one?
My wife thinks it's "S&GM", so S_____ and Grist Mill?

    Thanks in advance.

It does appear to be an ampersand, as in 'S&GM'. It's very frustrating that there appears to be no comprehensive, authoritative list of historic map abbreviations and indeed no universally adopted or agreed system used by all map-makers in all periods. Just lots of speculation and most folks seem to speculate that this does stand for 'Saw & Grist Mill'.

I could believe that the two types of mill might well be relying on the same power source, but would they really be housed in common premises?

I'll add my speculation that it might actually be for 'Seed & Grist Mill'... ie premises for processing both cereal/grain crops and non-cereal seed crops such as soya, mustard or whatever. Also perhaps oil-seed crops such as cotton-seed, linseed, sunflower seed, oil-seed rape and maybe even peanuts.

I have two examples that I've been wondering about:
    1. the "S H" is easy on this, it's a School House. But what is the "W S"? I can't figure that out.

    2. And this is the one I REALLY am interested in getting help with:
    - The "GM" on the left side is a Grist Mill, I think.
    - The "B.S.Shop" is a Black Smith Shop, I think.
    - But what is "COAL BANK" with that upside-down "U" symbol? I am guessing that it's a surface coal mine (and not a bank as in the financial institution), but is it possible it's actually a "Bank" with money?

    Attachment 1906337
Weigh Station ? Would be my guess.

My guess The Symbol under Coal bank Means "the Bank is Here" It actually Looks like a bank of coal

Many open pit mines/quarries/sediment mines use weigh stations on roads exiting the mines, so... "WS" may indicate a weigh station? My second guess and preference would be... Whiskey Saloon!

    Thanks all.

I managed to confirm from an official source (a National Registry of Historic Places filing) that the WS was a Wagon Shop.
I also may have permission to metal detector there later this month (homeowner asked me to check back after they finish some renovations).

I’ll let you know how that goes.

    - Brian.
