I suggest you start out reading all you can about metal detectors at the manufactures websites. Subscribe to some treasure magazines like western & Eastern Treasures This will give you a background on what metal detector is right for you to start with. A find book by Charles Garrett called Sucessful Coin Hunting will guide you on where to look.

First off, this is a hobby and should be fun.

Be sure and do your homework before you purchase a detector. Deciding what kind of md'ing you will be doing will help in selecting a type of detector. When you do decide to buy, stay with a reliable manufacturer and consider a used unit for your first purchase. If you decide to quit or upgrade later you can sell or trade without taking a great loss.
