Not Prepared!!

Well I hit the ocean today and it was a great day. Flat water low tide about an hour away and the machine is looking good. I go in the water with my snorkel and mask, no wet suit. Put earphones on and I have my U shaped sand digger hand held with me. well the machine is producing a perfect tone and nice and steady. I hunt for about a half hour with no hits and decide to head up to the cooler to get a drink and head back in. Well i turn themachine off get my drink and then head out again and I look down and even though I had the machine on I didn't have my signal volume up for the first half hour. DUH . so I laugh at myself and say thank god the other guy with the ex cal didn't come over too talk to me he probably would have noticed and laughed at me. What a Moron I was. So now its like starting all over. I walk in and up to about chest high and start the whole search area again. I have a good feeling about this area because you can feel the currents running and the countours at low tide show you as you walk where a good settling point is for debris or treasure. I get my first good signal about 10 minutes in and throw the mask down blow out the pipe and dive on the spot. . This SUCKS. My headphones come off I cant maintain balance because my body wants to float and the sand scoop is just not right for diving. Well this signal gets lost because by now the current has pushed me away from the target and I start to walk again. Hit the second target this time say OK lets Fan some of the sand away with my foot. NOT . Everytime I do that the current is pushing me around and by now I am getting a little ticked off. I dive on this target and same thing. No weight belt so I get moved away almost immediately and go search for the target again. No chance. I keep walking and by now the waves have picked up and the wind has too. I'm still in chest deep and the currents are just as strong. get the third signal . Try fanning with my foot. Then dive on it again. Get pushed away d that was all she wrote. I headed in after 2 hours and three nice hits with nothing. so lesson learned since this was my first time in the water . I'm getting the long handle scoop and a weight belt and loosing the mask and snorkel and going for the goggles only. It was good to get out though and see exactly what it would be like. PS the water temp was perfect and you can really get a feel for the current and pocjkets too with the temperature change. Plus going in with a lot of people around shows a lot of there habits and where the do really hang out and how far out. It was fun.

Apparently, they don't call you "Floater" for nothing! A pair of old sock(no holes) full of sand and tied together makes a great coil weight (I know you didn't say that was a problem) a weight belt and try going the whole route and get fins to snorkel. A brightly colored fishing weight makes a good hit marker (a ribbon about a foot but no more long will make it easier to see) I wish you better luck next time! HH omnicognic 8)

I stayed about another hour and found a Hot Wheel car, more pennies, and another dime. To many people following me around and asking the same question I'm sure everyone else gets "Find Anything?". Wished I had a penny for everytime that's asked, but then again I think I'm diggin them all! LOL

Ah Badger! That blue gill pic reminded me of the first and last time I heard my Deacon Grandpa cuss! I caught a 3# bluegill on the corner of a pop-tart with a cane pole!

Actually that is hysterical .
I did have some of these little fish just nibbleing away at me the whole time and when I would swing my coil they would just foolow it back and forth. It was really cool. Good day and Surf was with me the whole time. he met some other MD'ers from upstate NY . Who were just on vacation. He had a good time up on the sand. HH

Recommendations:

1: quality long-handled stainless steel scoop (greatly improves target recovery by 1000%)!

2: 3 mil sporty black & chartreuse shorty body glove (helps keep body heat in, and acts as an eye catcher to the ladies)!

3: weight belt with 25 lbs of lead (keeps Floater from floating)! (Get the zipper pouch belt with the soft baggy style weights for comfort)!

4: a pair of hard sole dive booties (protects against all the creepies on the ocean bottom, and compliments the body glove)!

Use all of the above in combination with ex-cal 1000 and you'll be the envy of all other detectorist on the beach (as well as) most of all the beach go'ers (plus) you're guaranteed to recover some good stuff with little effort while in style!!

Badger;? ?Were you telling Floater this or warning the fish about Floater?

Floater; If you use a weight belt, make sure you find out how much you need for your weight.
First time i went abalone diving, i didn't check. Jumped off a rock and went straight to the bottom. 8 ft or so. Had to drop my belt to come up. Then back in to fish my weights out 2 at a time.
In other words, don't be like me. Like BUGS says " What a moroon "

One thing I might add about the booties, either get the shorties(only go to the top of the foot) or make certain you dont get the black ones because otherwise at a distance they look like black dress socks! You don't need to feed the stereotype! HH omnicognic 8)

I just think wearing the wetsuit and booties would be torture in the water down here. I mean the surf temp. is in the 80's! You'd cook in that thing!! Definitly in the winter when the water temp hits a low of 71 degrees maybe.
Float, it seems like you like the demo sites and old houses more than the water so far.

Just my thoughts.
