They tell me more than a few years ago the vol. fire dept. had streets fairs around here to raise money, they had a press of some kind that would press out a penny and they sold them for a quarter. So it is a good luck penny

A little tip.

I have been detecting for about 6 years now, about 2 years ago using a hard covered note book, I started keeping a log of my finds, not the regular new coins, just old and different things, like your lucky penny there. I keep the metal detecting trip number, date, location, and my detecting buddy at the top of the list of items. The list consists of the Type (coin, artifact, etc), metal (lead, brass, copper), condition of the item, date (if applicable), quantity (e.g. "3" musket balls), and a short description (country, small, bent, etc). I number each item, this gives me a reference number that I can put on a sticker or write on a coin holder (e.g. trip-item or 1-1). I wished I had started doing this from the very beginning, because although I can remember most of the places I found things, I cannot really remember when, and who I was with. And when it comes to coins, it is even tough to remember where you found them. I now have about 20 pages of my notebook filled, some pages contain one list, and others contain 2 or 3. Although it was not my intention, I have managed to put together a nice collection of coins, jewelry, and artifacts. It would be nice to pass this on someday, and will be even nicer with a log of information about the items. I have also started putting my log along with a cigar box of my nicer finds out on my coffee table; it makes a great conversation piece. Believe me, at times this is a pain in the butt, and you won't feel like logging the items you have found, so I just write the info I can't get from the items (location, date and buddy) on a scrap of paper and put the whole works in a zip lock bag, and during the winter, I work my way through logging the items, and dream of summer days. A little tip, that goes a long way.
