Another question from earlier post , I have narrowed my choice of MD brands to Tesoro or White, Now my ? is seeing as I have elbow trouble, do all these machine have to be swung fast or do they have slower swing speeds. Just don't want to invest in this hobby if I can't do it, thats why I need a light weight machine. Thanks a heap for any replies Paul.[/b]

Paul, I believe that most of the Tesoro's and the White's with exception of the XL pro are slow sweep machines. You may have to ask your dealer. I myself went to a light machine (Fisher 1236X), because of some shoulder problems. I would get a machine that has a pinpoint, I have enjoyed mine, especially on deep coins. Good Luck and have fun! Cal G.

White's Classics, IDX, IDX Pro, etc. (2 filter detectors) - 2ft. per second recommended for most conditions . Not sure about mxt, dfx, etc.
Minelab Soveriegn - Almost impossible to swing too slow.
No experience with Tesoros though.
Hope it helps.

Post script!
When searching for shallow targets in competition, gravel, shallow hard pan, etc. You can almost swing the 2 filter whites like you are killing a snake. However you will miss anything deeper than a 3-4 inches when in this weed whacker mode.

Thailand
I have been out of the THing loop (no pun intended) for over a year here in Thailand but depending on what you are looking for, consider a Whites with a Big Foot or a Tesoro with a Cleanseeep coil. The coil may be a bit heavier but you can cover ground faster, and the pinpointing is easy with it. I also have a shoulder and back problem and hope to bring back my old Toltec II if the new Cleansweep coil is as good as the Bigfoot on my Whites.

The sweepspeed on a Whites detector is variable from slow to moderately fast, but I find just as long as you move it smoothly back and forth like you are painting the ground. Most people just starting out, move the detector at first like a magnet, they slowly move it here and then here a little bit, then that way a little bit in slow deliberate moves. This is not the way, swing it at whatever pace is comfortable to you. I wouldn't recommend getting a larger coil for any detector if you have a sore elbow. The added weight unbalances the detector and feels like a brick on the end of the shaft. Also, it is harder to pinpoint with a larger coil. Look at all the detectors on the market, see what coil they come with standard. It is usually an 8 inch or 9 inch coil, this is the best size for all around hunting and comfort. A 5 inch coil is really good at pinpointing a target, but it is also a speciality coil for hunting in trashy areas, the large coils are for non-trashy areas and where there may be targets deeper than a standard coil can reach. I have a bad elbow and shoulder problems also and I swing a Whites XLT, and have no problems with it hurting me any more than normal use does. Get the Whites Classic III, and get busy hunting coins or relics and enjoying the hobby instead of all this worrying about it. lol HH Scotty

PS
Paul I see you and I are about the same age, which means we probably may have the same hurts and pains. lol I find that after a days hunt, my knees hurt, my back hurts, get cramps in my legs, and look forward to the heatpad and Ben-Gay application. lol It is like anything else, if you haven't done it, its gonna hurt some until you get used to it or in shape for it. lol You don't have top swing a Whites fast. But it does have that capability simply because that is how the competition hunters like to swing a detector. If you would like a demonstration of how a competition hunter swings a detector, then killing snakes is the term, or fast and furious is the style. Go to one of the competition hunts in your area sometime, you will see what I mean. HH Scotty

newbie with sweep speed question

Paul, I am in Udonthani, several members of the local VFW were stationed here. I wasn't, spent my Nam tour in Korea, I was Army. As for the bigger coils, I didn't notice any discernable weight difference using the Big Foot but my Whites Eagle spectrum is a heavy machine compared to newer models. Contrary to other opinions, the Big Foot makes pinpointing easier for me than the round coils and I am assuming the Clean Sweep will likewise be as easy
