Elwood,
The BIBLE for the layman on meteorites is "Rocks from Space" by O. Richard Norton. You can also Google up Robert Hagg in Arizona... Meteorite Man. Those two are your best bet. The "test" to see if an iron ROCK is a meteorite is if it has nickle in it. Iron/nickle rocks do not occur naturally on earth. Also, if the rock is cut and pollished, it will probably have Widdmanstatin (spell?) structure. Rocks From Space will explane it all thouroughly. Any machine set to no discrimmination will find them... They are iron. Most finds today are from known strewn fields. Again, Rocks will explane all. TTC
