How many people TH'ing is too many?

With all of the new commercials out there touting their detectorware, do you notice a difference in how many people are out there these days compared to just a few years ago and has it made your hunting access any more difficult?

well there is definitely more people detecting today but the answer to your question is not an easy one. I've seen no change in hunting access in my area. But some places do have less to find for obvious reasons and some parks have far more people hunting them.

the people leaving behind unfilled holes are the #1 threat to MD in public places. We could go on and on but I figure that if 10% of the population was MD'ing - you'd probably take up another hobby.

How many people detecting is too much?

40 years ago my answer would have been one other person detecting in my neck of the woods. I would have not gotten out of my car to detect a park if I knew someone else had swung a coil there.

Yet after all those years and with today's incredible competition, I am still here in this hobby. I don't get out much anymore but I still have 4 detectors in my closet.

I guess for die-hards like me the number of folks detecting today is meaningless. I will stop detecting when they pry my cold dead fingers from my machine.

It has grown considerably over the last 20 years. I used to depend on my clad finds to finance my longer expeditions, I can't do that now, hunting pressure is very high in the Atlanta area for the renewable dropped coinage. The older material is still as plentiful as ever, as most hunters don't have the patience, or knowhow to hunt it.

I ve been detecting for over 20 yrs. I see no threat, WHY?? because here i have pounded just about every park to death. Oh i still find stuff but i think once people get to these places all they'll dig are pulltabs.plus..... i do research all winter so by spring i have many places to hit,, out of the way places that no one would think of going.this yr i bought a new detector after 14 yrs.last week i encountered a newbie detecting, i went to say hi,i noticed he had a radio shack brand detector,, i wished him luck and went on.The park guys in my town know me so i dont have a problem.Be cause they know i always fill my holes unlike people who travel from one town to another who dont care and leave the park lookin like s##t!! I have been going over old ground with my new Explorer II and finding quite a bit of coins others have missed. I think a lot of the new machines will perform equilly as well. Makes it fun to find good stuff in the hunted out sites. My .02 Cladius.

I do agree with the hole thing. I fill my holes because I don't want to hurt anyone and also, on the beach, if someone were to get hurt they could potentially sue you (you know, all Californians are sue happy!). One thing I find at least with sand, is if I make a big enough pile and I go to move it back into the hole with my foot, it helps work out those inner thigh muscles quite well after ten holes or so.
I asked this question because on the beach, even the bums are starting to save their can money and compete with us by using new detectors. Because they have all the time in the world, they are pulling in their share of stuff that we are losing out on on the most popular beaches. They can be there night and day, and are! When I go to the beach I can see the most popular areas with patterns tracked into them in a methodical way. Bummer, time to move on to the next spot. :cry:
I guess I'll just have to start collecting cans to keep them on their toes!!

I've been at it for 3 years now.Am I hurting anyone?? Well I don't think so.I have respect for where I hunt though.So long as everyboby has respect, there should not be a problem.

Look at Bow Hunting .I remember when I first started Bow Hunting 24 years ago there was no where near the numbers then,, that there are bow hunting now.When the market started getting people to buy Bows,they started getting better and cheaper.The cheaper and better the bow ,the more people that got into it.And they got much easier to use and brought in even more people.

This ,I think is where Metal Detectors are now,,just starting to get easier to use for the average Joe.The next 5 years will tell.

I have a Bounty Hunter .This is the detector that is going to bring alot of people into this hobby.They are cheap in cost.But they do work well and are fairly easy to use.They are inenspensive because they are made of plastic,not very durable.But they do have the technology and a warranty.

I don't see any pressure in my area for Detecting.Have seen only 3 people Detecting in 3 years.I seen one guy,old man, that had been doing this for years.Used a fold up shovel,no pin pointer.Dug a huge hole ,then grabbed the dirt and run it over the top of the coil on his minelab to find the goods.Made a freakin mess when he was done.He wanted me to go detecting with him and couldn't figure out why nobody will.I showed him what a small shovel and a pinpointer will do,,couldn't change his way.Its not always the new guy!!!!!!!

I don't think Detecting will ever take off like Bow Hunting or most hobbies.Its hard to explain but i will try.Friends of mine have seen me detect and kind of tease when I dig up junk.But they are very interested in it.One friend used to laugh at me,,but now is asking what detector he should buy.Most will never do it in public,makes them feel inferior I think.They don't know what there missing.I think you know what I mean,,,you explain it...

Good topic! I've seen so many one-timers around here I can't keep track. Checking in the pawn shops as I do for used machines the response is usually that as soon as a metal detector shows up there, it's sold. The old timers in this hobby in this area will shrug and say it's all worked out. Well I have droughts and downpours in those areas declared "worked out" depending on how I hunt them and how often.

See the occasional out of towner who mistakenly thinks the old areas and parks in this town have never been hunted, but the cast of regular characters in this area has shrunk dramatically in the last few years. Many, like the old timer who had a shop in town here and sold Garretts went off to the great hunt in the sky, RIP. But the newer ones seem to throw it off after the usual pulltab encounters become tedious.

There were also some professional can collectors in town, but they too have disappeared leaving that niche available. I look forward to the upcoming spring garage sales to see how many if any MD's are available. I agree the BH marketing thing is crazy, they cannot keep them stocked at the local Wal Marts, but I do not see them in action around town. I usually only find those begiiner's holes in the parks, which I always fix before looking for the perps, main desire being to educate.
