I have a Whites surf PI metal detector for beach and underwater hunting I have been using it for many many years and it out preforms the Minelab X caliber an many others which cost more .in depth and sensitivity p.m. me if you need more info but go with the white surf PI and their warrantee is probably one of the best on the market thank you

May I suggest the Minelab Equinox 600 or 800. Super detector and meets the waterproof need.

I agree with Rustygold, Nox 600 or 800. For the money and performance percost I don't think you can beat it. I'm a all out Minelab Excalibur hunter and swear by it but If I were looking for a new beach machine that would be it, other then the new fisher PI coming out and one thing for sure you don't want a PI for starters.

If he is a Vet, some dealers offer a discount on the Nox's.

I second that ... a lot of detector for the money ... very stable in saltwater and waterproof to boot.
He would be happy with either the 600 or the 800.
