I'm having a hard time from my skeptical point of view taking in the suggestions from Goodyguy (of which I value his point of view) but on the point of Iron Ore or Magnetite or even Hematite or any other of Nuggets of Iron, Magnetite, Hematite, etc., that occur in mother nature that is strictly pure and not alloyed with gold or silver or platinum or nickel or other metals. This is a rock and not slag from any mining....It's a nugget of something and if it was a nugget of Iron, Magnetite, Hematite etc., then surely there are others out there and I sure would like to see one of approximately the same weight (200 grams). HOT ROCKS that contain a high ratio of Iron that we run into, okay I understand, but I've never seen one that I couldn't Discriminate out with my detectors and I've surely never have seen one that appears to be Pure or Nugget like. I'm trying to eliminate it from being a Meteorite...here's a few more pic's...Darrell Working the Rock 002.jpg Working the Rock 003.jpg Working the Rock 004.jpg Working the Rock 005.jpg Working the Rock 006.jpg Working the Rock 007.jpg Working the Rock 008.jpg Working the Rock 009.jpg Working the Rock 010.jpg Working the Rock 011.jpg Working the Rock 001.jpg

It is not a meteorite. Just take it to a geologist at your local college.

any idea what this is? my husband struck it with a sledge hammer at our work sight and it sparked and only a small piece broke off. the out side is green and looks like it has been melted and the inside is a light green with white covering it and rust spots. it almost looks like it had a crust pored on it. sorry the pics are so bad.

Well Respectfully I'm going have to disagree for now, after some careful research and about 4 hours on the phone with some other experts the shape of metorites really has nothing to do with it, round and smooth like normal cobble are COMMON with Meteorites, in fact there are many examples of them that are spherical or round as round as the earth or a baseball and so far my window test on this rock has proved conclusive although I am still myself a little skeptical but that is just my nature, so figuretively speaking the jury is still out, hee,hee..... I have collected meteorites for 35 years. What you are saying about round shapes is simply not true! I don't know where you developed such a misconception, but you are very much mistaken. Sure, a few, but one could never call it common! In addition, your specimen does not resemble a meteorite at all. Like Terry said, that is not a meteorite. Not everyone here is an expert. You could register with one of the meteorite-only forums/mailing lists and you will receive lots of expert opinions. And they will all be "not a meteorite". But we do have some very experienced folks here on TreasureNet as well. Terry is one. With all due humility, I hope, so am I. Mine is a voice with decades of experience. And that is simply not a meteorite. One cannot always tell by photos alone. But, in this instance, it's easy. Not a meteorite.....

The rock you show at the start of the thread is not exactly "round" in any event. Its shape itself is not unusual for a stone meteorite. But, otherwise, it's appearance is most certainly not that of a meteorite.....

Bear in mind that the forces of atmospheric entry, specifically ablation, would make a perfectly round meteorite all but impossible!! Ablation alone would prevent such an occurance, and make it extremely rare....

Have any of you guys ever found a meteorite? How big? What depth? What detecting equipment did you use?
Any of your friends hunt for them? Why did you pick a certain spot to hunt?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
jim Peterson
