Going to pry myself away from the beach for a week in May. Heading for the mountains. Anyone know of any good spots to search for meterorites in the NC Mountains ?
Not much in the way of searching for meteorites in the carolinas. The forest and changing landscape tend to be a hinderance. Good places for example are in the AZ deserts where the landscape pretty much stays the same. No vegetation to get in the way.
Open fields are the best we can do around here. Definately a needle in a hey stack.
Out west, they can still see creater impacts and will search downrange to find fragments. Maybe some colored topo maps of different areas would lend a clue to some possible impact sites from long ago.
Robert, I have found several articals on meterorites and the formation of the carolina bays dating back to about 1930. But can not find anything on possible metorites in the western part of the state.
