Will we be thawed out by March 15th?
I can't remember when the ground thaws in lower-MI. I seem to remember mid march being the ticket -I'm counting the days and man, it's tough -
March
Avg. high = 44 F
Avg. low = 28 F

Re: Will we be thawed out by March 15th?
Good Luck Ian!
Our snowbanks in the Northern Lower are sky high! Having trouble seeing cars coming when I pull out of my driveway and driving around town.
Prediction is for a "warmer than normal" February. I'm hoping that means the 60's up here!
Keep us informed! If your area thaws that early I may just have to make a road trip!
Good Luck,
Mark

Re: Will we be thawed out by March 15th?
I started detecting in 1990 and my birthday happens to be March 15 , most years I can not detect on my Birthday, even if we don't have snow the ground is almost always froze. Thats here in Midland , by the 1st of April you can almost always get out.

Re: Will we be thawed out by March 15th?
I heard February was supposed to be colder than normal, with normal precipitation. The snow is very high here on the West coast, and I don't anticipate being able to detect my March 15th, unless gload warming wakes back up

Re: Will we be thawed out by March 15th?
Last year I was out on March 16th and dug my first silver coin of the year. Ground was somewhat diggable in patchy spots.....I know I was out sooner than that digging shallow clad. This was in Jackson county. Usually easy diggins by April fools day.

Re: Will we be thawed out by March 15th?
This link shows county by county as the weight restrictions (Frost Laws) are lifted across the state by the various Road Commissions. They all turn red when the laws are in affect and turn green as they are lifted. It's not an exact science for when you should be able to dig in your area. But it's a good way to get a general idea of how the state thaws out in the spring.

Whether we can dig would be nice. At least we'll be able to get out and snoop around.

Re: Will we be thawed out by March 15th?
Hey R and R!
Welcome to Michigan! LOL.
My parents spend their summers in the UP and their winters in Alabama.
I get real tired of them calling every time we are below zero to give me their weather report.
Good Luck,
Mark

Yep! I was spoiled by all the non-frozen ground! Brrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!! Sign in town says 42 days till spring. I guess the water will thaw before the ground does, may get in the water.

Re: Will we be thawed out by March 15th?
Sure would be nice to get out before March 15. It is calling for 40 degree and rain this week for Fri and Sat. Maybe with some luck it will melt the snow and unthaw the ground some.....Matt

If your trackin an ACE 250, ya better get in front of em' lol. Looking forward to trying mine as soon as the ground get unfroze. From fooling with it in the house, I'm impressed. Been swingin sticks since the 90's and used prob +20 machines and for the $$$ ya can't do better, also light and TID!

Re: Will we be thawed out by March 15th?
Hello, R and R,
WElcome to Michigan. I imagine it feels real old to you, coming from Alabama. I am in southeastern Miat the bottom of Lake Huron and we are in quite a cold snapright now; colder than usual. At this minute it is 2 degrees and is supposed to go a little below 0 before morning. Sat and Sun it is supposed to go up into the 40's.
I was raised in the Upper, around the Gulliver area on US2 so I know what the winters are like up there. We left that area and moved down here in 1954.
Hope you don't get too much of that cabin fever before spring gets here. LOL
Have a good day.
Ray
