Michigan top 5 for gold
OK today i read this article on gold and Michigan, its tied at number 5 with gold prospecting... kind of hard to believe but its true... the web site also had maps to show where gold has been found in rivers and land...even Ohio has areas of gold... I'm trying to save or download this map to show you guys... Its actually pretty intresting, i may invest in a small sluice box.. It had tips on tricks on how and where to start your search in rivers.. I was given a small gas powered water pump so this could be good to use to wash the dirt. its made with a weed whacker motor but it works to remove water... so all i need is a small portable sluice box.. i seen them from 50 bucks to 100 for a portable one.

Re: Michigan top 5 for gold
Funny you should mention gold. I just went to my county's Historical Society meeting last Sunday where they had a local man (named Don Honcoop) give gold panning lessons along with his telling about gold in Michigan.
This is the newspaper article with me being the guy on the left in the green shirt. My MD-ing friend Ed is on the right and Don is in the middle. http://www.argus-press.com/articles/...news/news2.txt
Don started gold panning 13 years ago. He said at the time that there was not too much good equipment out there as far as sluice boxes and the like, so he started to build his own equipment. Well others seen his stuff and they wanted the same equipment so now he has his own shop in Owosso where he makes and sells the equipment. Here is a link to his website. http://www.honcoophighbanker.com/
The club Don belongs to goes around to various gravel pits and they pan or dredge for gold. Don did tell us that gold can pretty much be found in every Michigan county but not enough to warrant a big recovery or mining operation. Our Michigan gold was brought down by the glaciers and what is found here is mostly flour or real fine tiny particles of gold.
I don't know when I will get a chance to do some panning but I learned a lot in the little time I spent there listening to Don.
Happy Hunting,
Scott (MI)

I have a lot to learn from prospecting to getting the gold... Re: Michigan top 5 for gold
Here is a couple of places that you would find some gold at. The most of it is flour gold but you will find some a little bigger. Sebawa gravel pit in Sebawa county plus in Athen MI there is a LDMA land and when the GPAA is having a outing you could go and try it out. I will try and get the address for the gravel pit and post it later for you if you would like.....Matt

Here is the address to the gravel pit now it is open to GPAA member and their guests.
Sebewa Sand and Gravel
11858 Karffer Hwy
Portland, MI
contact Dale Hansen @ 517-526-0377
He asks that members stay away from where the heavy equipment is operating and that we do our prospecting closer to the creek on the property.
There is a Whites dealer in Syvania Oh that sell sluice boxes I think mine was a little over a $100 and it is 10" wide and 36" long. Hope this help you out and make sure you post your finds so we all can see.....Matt
