A helpful tip I hope!........

Several years ago a friend made me a root saw. Many times the ones on the diggers are not very good, others are too big. This is the same type that he and his dad used. You can go to most any hardware and get a wood cutting sawzall blade. They will even have different lengths, and teeth choices. You will also need a 7/8" piece of dowell rod. I suppose 1" would work fine also. You need to cut a slot down the middle end of the rod to slide the blade into. Just cut it long enough for the part that you are sliding into the handle. the handle is about 4 3/4" long the cutting part of the blade is 4 1/2".
So the total length is about 9 1/4" You will notice each blade has two holes in it. Lay the part that will go into the handle on the rod so you can mark the two hole locations. You will need to drill two holes to match the ones in the blade. You will also need two 1" bolts and two nuts that will go through the handle and holes on the blade to secure it. Use the type of bolts that have a rounded screw driver head on it not a hex head. It is ok to have the head of the bolt and the nut go into the wood a little. You don't want them sticking way out of the handle. Lastly you wrap the handle with black tape or other if you like. It will last a long time. I think mine is at least 5 years old! One of the great things about this saw is when you put it in the hole to saw a root. It will fit anywhere you could fit a pencil. Sometimes you have many roots, and the 2" wide digger blade wont go between them.

I wear a tool/nail pouch and it lays flat in the bottom.
One could make a sheath easy enough.

I carry one of these. It's made by Fiskars and the blade slides into the handle.

You could also get some of that liquid vinyl dip that is sold in hardware stores, it will give you better grip on the handle, you can find it in yellow, red or blue colors......NGE
