Sword Belt Plate (Clean it or not)

Hi folks, found this belt plate a little while back. Should I leave it as is or clean it up a bit ?

This is a great find, and it's great that you're sharing it with us, but you already posted it in Today's Finds--and got several replies.  I made my reply once, and will not type it out again.  Please refer to your other post.

I didn't see you other post so I am glad you did post this two times.

I would only clean it a bit with a toothbrush or soft brush to remove all of the dirt. You don't want to ruin the patina. If you do try to restore it I am afraid your end result will be less than desired. That's just my opinion.

Smoke, unless you have a lot of experience in correctly cleaning CW relics, I'd leave it alone. Your SBP can be "cleaned" and by that I mean remove only the oxidized green copper residue that has leached to the surface. It should retain its natural "chocolate" patina. Otherwise, you risk over cleaning and reducing its value greatly. Very nice find, congrats.

Twenty five years later, and I'm still looking for relics.....
