Good question, yesterday was the first time iv tried the feature that separates but didnt seem to help much not real sure yet but it seems difficult to hear the separation, I still haven't quit figured it out yet...

The tone on a ferrous target against the tip is a pulsating tone that is different than the solid tone against the tip on a non ferrous target. This feature comes into play when you are right on top of the target.

It depends on the specifics of the targets! If the items are side-by-side, you cant count on getting only a NF response. Large ferrous items will also fool the 35 into responding as NF. the iron response on the best of targets is only good within a few inches. If you aren't close to a nail, it will still respond as NF.
