I really like the 8" tornado coil compared to the 10" for woodland hunting because of its smaller size and its super rugged. My question is am I loosing a large degree of depth using it or is it not too much of a difference to worry about?

Well there is a small difference of a couple inches in depth but you also are losing more square inches of the detector field when you use the smaller coil and you need to over lap more. The smaller coil only allows you to get around trash and bushes better. The smaller 8 inch coil is lighter and that is a plus.
