This is a semi silly rant/longing lol But GAH!!! My hubby thinks metal detecting is just a waste of time/stupid/bore. He made fun of me even a few times with how many hours I would be out on the detector my dad let me borrow. Sure I didn't find anything "worth" anything in his eyes, but I have a little wood box that contains the things I consider treasures even if they are barely decipherable 1800's pennies, toy cars, dog rabies tags, clock pendulum and some squiggly piece of something that is magnetic.

So here I am, watching as the calender is ticking off to warmer days and I am fidgeting. I will need to return the detector back to my dad and I want to buy my own. This is definitely something I will be sticking with for a long time so to me I wouldn't be "wasting money". hehe I have already thought I could order one (he doesn't look at the cc statements..and they are my cc anyway) and have it shipped to my dad. Then go pay him a visit and be like oh tra la la la derp derp look I get to borrow his other model he owns (evil grin)

I dunno..thoughts ..ideas =)
I have a few odds and ends of thins I am thinking of throwing up onto ebay that I see have a tiny market right now, figuring a sorta out with the old in with the new. And hey even if I get $5 total that is still $5 towards my new detector......

Rant or whatever you want to call it over. Just had to vent to a place where I think I would be understood. :tongue3:

Tell him it is cheaper than a whole new wardrobe including shoes. ETrac will hold its value a lot longer than the new wardrobe you will need to buy to get rid of the sadness you feel for him not supporting your hobby...

lol I think a lot of the problem is we have our own business and it's tax time. Where some are looking forward to getting refunds, we always owe, plus the next quarterly payment is due at the same time.

Sadly the wardrobe argument wouldn't work as I am pretty basic with my clothes (major tom boy..couldn't climb trees and play in the woods as a kid with "pretty dress" on..dad raised me so I blame him ..in a good way) and due to high arches never became one with a shoe fetish =P

Thanks for responses!

I solved both of my spousal issues.....divorced both of 'em. Now I do whatever I want that I can afford.

Maybe that's your angle. Tell him an E-Trac is cheaper than a divorce.

Heck, you are a true treasure. Your hubby doesn't know how lucky he is that you just like to metal detect instead of dragging him into dress shops or fabric stores. It is time to put your foot down and have it delivered to your home and tell him you ordered it with your own money and if he doesn't like it, he can jump in the lake. :whip2:

Yeah, what Sandman said! My husband doesn't know how lucky he is either, never been much of a clothes horse either and fer-git high heel shoes, kind of awkward when you're metal detecting dontcha think? Welcome to the forum.

I could have written this myself. From a husband that thinks I'm a dork that I want to metal detect to the business and quarterlies . Putting anything on tbe credit card is heavily frowned upon as well. I'm also a bit of a tomboy and would rather dig in tbe dirt , then buy nice clothes.
So about 2 months ago I finally stood up for myself. I said to him, " look, I don't spend money, I stay home and take care of the kids and everything around home . You go on hunting and fishing trips , and I never go anywhere.... I'm ordering this thing. I want it and I'm doing it."
I've hardly put it down since. Not to mention it's been a nice work out, cause I've taken to hiking the woods with it.
Do it. And don't lie about it. I'm sure he spends money on things he likes to do.

Dorks unite! Good advice there Holly. Vanderia, I would be upfront too with your husband but order the detector with your own money and just tell him what you are going to do. You'll enjoy the hobby much more if you're upfront about it.

Dangerous ground here,:laughing7: once he knows its important to you(your hobby) and you are needing a detector how to afford it should in fairness be more of an issue.
he can help(early christmas, birthday, anniversery, ect.)or you will go it alone.if you need to drag it out through budgeting to avoid a card charge you still have a goal. my defence has been, gotta do something, and there areworse things you could be doing. good luck.

Good luck on the E-track. I want one badly, but I'm saving for other things at the moment. Maybe I'll set aside a fund for one too. Good to see another girl in the hobby. :icon_thumleft:

Thank you all for the responses and the laughs (dorks unite :tongue3:) I have been keeping an eye on ebay and seeing some used ones on there that start nice and low but by the end of the auction the total are only 1-200 short of a new one. (I don't need the extra stuff as I already kitted myself out last year) And of course there is the fear of who am I buying this from on ebay and did they really beat it into the ground first or throw it into a pond and are only saying it is nice and shiny when it is actually not? Some items I don't mind used..others I am a bit skeptical on unless I know for sure the person is reputable.
Pretty sure I am going to throw some things on ebay myself that I see are selling. Give that a go for about a month and my aim is to cut the cost of the detector a couple of hundred thru what I make. Then cuz tax season will be gone, re-approach the subject again. Meanwhile the weather will be back to spring (I hope) and he can see that I am out MD again and how much I love it and perhaps he will bend :laughing7:
Sadly there is no my money and his money with our business which is always a BIG pain even for little things. But I take care of the bills etc and have an idea what we can and cannot afford and I know already we can afford it...so I will just have to bide my time.......

Have a great day everyone!!!

Vandaria, not telling you what to buy but the minelab explorer se is a real good machine and you can get one barely used with warranty and x1 probe and 6x8 coil to for about 850. (thats what i bought mine for). also etracs with warranty for 1000 or less are always on the detecting sites. CB

I would tell you the same thing I tell everybody (usually men) who ask this question.

If your spouse cannot support your hobby, then maybe that is not a very good spouse. They don't have to like it, nor do they have to participate. Would they rather you hanging out at the bar or casino? Do they not have hobbies of their own that you do not find interesting?

If you can afford it without dragging the family into debt, I say, go for it. I play with metal detectors, ham radio, competitive 3 gun events, offroading, 4 wheelers, etc etc. But at the same time I work my butt off and can play around without taking food from my kids mouths or dabbling in questionable activities. I embrace the inner (or outer) nerd and live my life as I see fit. Fortunately, my wife understand that just as I understand her hobbies.

NEVER make apologies for your nerdiness. Embrace it, live it, be true to yourself. And surround yourself with people who will help you achieve that.
