So I bought a lightly used gt and I have the settings pretty basic. Iron mask on, notch and descrim all the way counter clockwise. The tones don't sound like the machines I hear on YouTube - there is a guy doing airtests, etc and even some guys digging in the field. It seems to have a ding or zip sound, where mine sounds like "whoomp" when crossing a Target and is kind of hard to pinpoint. Is this right? Thanks

Here's a pretty good video that gives the audio sounds you should hear!

Really? That is the video I saw. My settings are the same except for pinpoint is off and sensitivity is on auto for me. I can see my machine is functioning about the same. Found some deep pennies and shotgun shell on a quick hunt today. But with the slow tones it makes the pinpointing hard. And I can usually pinpoint on my other machines within a couple of inches. Weak battery? Ground balance or track function? It came from a well known dealer.

Are you switching to All Metal and then Pinpoint? It's usually decent at pinpointing a target within a couple of inches.

I've never used the pinpoint feature. If you wiggle over target and back away until target just goes away its right at front of coil.

Fletch88: Ah, that I will have to try. I tried pinpoint but not in all metal mode. It just seems like the machines in different videos are giving more precise beeps as they go along. Even a penny on the surface didn't give a very quick tone. I do notice higher and lower tones for different metals.
Does it matter if I have it in Track or Fixed when using discriminaton?

Donkarlos, When you are in discriminate mode the PP/Track/Fixed switch is disabled. Within the discriminate mode you can use iron mask on or off. I usually run Iron Mask on. Also, set to All Metal and Track to do ground balancing. You can do a stationary ground balance by pumping the coil up and down close to the ground or by swinging the coil while walking ( if the area is pretty clean of trash targets) Then switch to fixed or PP after several feet of scanning. This article has all this in it and more. Hope this helps out!

Update: all is well and it seems to be working fine. thanks for helping me get squared away.
backyard hunt found a zinc, some other junk, and tiny silver. Love that silver high tone. all metal pin point works great, too.

You have a monster machine you just may not know it...try this...disc 8oclock..notch far left...vol 3/4 ..iron mask on..threshold switch.. track/pinpoint is disabled in disc mode..sens to AUTO...threshold to barely audible......go sweep a few targets and listen to there tones...dig everything for the first 50hrs...she will talk to you but you have to learn her language...bombguy

A quick hunt here and there is starting to show the power of this one..luckily all my "old" hunted sites have suddenly become new again

That's the power of the GT with iron mask.

I'm missing my GT! There's just something I love about this machine over the newer screened machines.

If things go well I may depart with my PI machine soon. I'll keep my Cibola though, for kicks.
Haven't tried a beach hunt yet and can't wait.

The beach is where the GT shines in my experience. It ignores the bobby pins and beach comber pins and the tiny bits of rusty nails. When it alerts with the mellow tones it's a great feeling. I had a PI machine briefly but found it to be too much work for wet/dry sand hunting.

Not to mentioned the amount of trash to haul out. I don't mind a few handfuls of pulltabs but all the bolts and chicken wire from PI digging becomes an issue.

Here's a salt water sand hunt for about an hour. Getting the hang of it.

Death spiral around the fishing weights. That's usually where to loot is too!

Yeah all this stuff was in a 40' x 10' area. Had to leave because of time. Hated leaving!
