A few weeks ago I left my house, and when I got back my Xterra was laying on the floor from where it was in the corner. (think cat knocked it over but can't prove it). Anyway, since then external speaker works fine and detects well, but when I plug in any headphones the external speaker mutes but no sound in the headphones. Is this something I could fix easily, or should I send in for repair? Any idea on cost to fix? Where would I send it? It is out of warranty.

Are you handy with a soldering iron? Being that it is out of warranty, I would try to repair it myself, as it sounds like a broken terminal on the headphone jack. I believe the jack is circuit board mounted so the main difficulty would be separating the control box housing, it's been awhile since I had my X-Terra so I cant remember how easily the housing comes apart. Not having a nut on the jack makes the XT vulnerable should it fall & lands on the jack. Good luck.

It is strange that this could happen with just teh detector falling over. Those contacts are pretty strong, and springy.

Are you sure your cat didn't jab a screwdriver in there or something?

Do you have another set of headphones to try out in case your cat got to those as well?

The Xterras come apart real easy, had my older Xterra apart for the same reason. It had a loose connection, (not caused by a cat), but I did toss it around, drop it on the ground a few times and it never had a smooth ride in my truck bed. Take the back off and have a look, you can't hurt it and it goes together as easy as it comes apart. My X30 is 10 years old and still works fine.

I'm sure you have tried this already... but if not try a different pair of headphones before tearing into it. More than likely the jack will need to be fixed, though... no good answers as for someone to fix it except for the factory service center.

I am kind of embarrassed. The problem was the headphones. The jack works fine.
