only the French make that breakfast with day or two day old French bread that has really dried out. No preservatives in their locally baked bread and it dries out rapidly and the "French toast" made from it is much better than that made from our pre-sliced preservative laden American style bread. The best I ever made was in the Bahamas using fresh baked "coco bread" which is a local specialty and has ground coconut (not the sweetened kind) in the bread. It comes in unsliced loaves and when cut thick makes superb French toast. If you're ever down in those islands definitely seek it out.
