I have both the factory Minelab hip mount kit and the one that Plugger makes. Both work fine, however, with the Plugger version, you have the practically disassemble it to remove the battery. Not a biggie, but, kind of annoying if you have to do it in the field. I haven't heard of the E-Z Tote either. Any photos or links?

No waist belts for me, it causes shorts in the cables from the flexing when sweeping coil.

I believe you can use Zip lines to prevent the flexing!
Time will tell!

Here is a pic! Belt slot through plastic stem between two yellow tape sticker. Notch holes to mount unit so it hangs off your belt. My guess is that it caused a lot of issues with the cables so they stopped making them.

My design eliminated these problems and is also quick release...

Aircraft Alum.

Btw ... This design has been far surpassed by 2 others I did.

I have one rig that has been in service for 5 years of serious use.

I for one have never had a cable problem of any kind on any detector... err I take that back... My JW 8x skid cable... which was rectified within a half an hour.

When the x2 was scheduled for release I had 2 of the first to hit the U.S... for the sole purpose to test / manipulate / tweek / beat them to death.
Many of the limitations of the excal were exposed and overcome by me through this.

No one... I assure you... has put the Excal(s) through the ringer like I have.

Everything from 8 foot shafts... to straight strap to leg with velco tests.

While you wait for his answer........I have both the stock Minelab hip mount and the one that Plugger sells. I don't notice any performance or "feel" difference. The main drawback to the Plugger unit is being able to easily remove and replace the battery. You pretty much have the take the shaft off the webbing to do it, whereas the Minelab one is easy to R & R. Just strap the cables to the control tube so they don't flex at the pod end. Leave enough slack in the coil cable so that it has no sharp bends/flexes when you swing the coil. That should keep the chances of a cable failure to a minimum.

Be aware, waist/chest belts keeps repair center busy doing expensive repairs. Over 99% of the excals they receive with shorts in the headphones and coil cables are from people using a waist belt or chest mount. New 10" stock coil is $175 and $75 labor, new stock head phones are $150 and $112.50 in labor, little over $500 repair bill for both and they get lots of them in with shorts in cables.

Actually ... shaft mounted unit causes far more strain / wear on HP cable.

Hip / chest causes more wear on the coil wire.

AARC What's the best set up for hip mount for excal?

Well... heh... IMO...

There are "pros and cons" to EVERY excal setup... and I personally use various setups... depending on the situation.

But to answer your question as best I can...

What may be best for me... may not be best for you.

And IMO for best... Is not sold... or even produced... "yet". heh

Is the typical failure usually a short? My understanding was that it was usually an open. I'm just curious. In the 10+ years I've been using my 3 Excaliburs, I haven't had a cable failure (knock, knock) I did have a bad coil one time, but, it was the coil itself and not the cable, plus it was under warranty anyway. The key is to not put a strain on any cable and allow enough slack so you don't cause repeated hard flexing at any one point.

Not according to repair center, of the number of excals coming into repair center, over 90% of excals needing headphone due to shorts in cables were on waist and chest mounts.
