I got permission to hunt a private summer camp. I did my homework and found out the camp was established in 1949.

The first hunt was on a 90 degree day and I went solo. i decided to hit the baseball field first. I went around the edges in the shade then all over. I was shocked as all I found was clad. I even went into the woods where I found a penny spill including a 1941 wheat. In the middle of the field I found a 1954 nickel and a gold plated 2016 charm.

The field was obviously hunted to death. and I can tell this by the dates. There was one dime from 1977 all the rest were mid to late 80's and beyond. There was a worn 1983 quarter the rest were all mid 80's or higher. One 1954 nickel and some pennies from the 60's and 70's shows me that it wasn't filled. The wheat penny was mixed with a few 1960's pennies and I found those in the woods. All this information tells me it was hunted most likely around the early 1980's(80, 81, or 82).

I was extremely depressed by this as I planned this hunt for over a year. At the insistence of my father, I went again and hunted around the main house. The results were much better. My father got 3 silvers, 1951 and 52 dime, and and 1952 quarter(not pictured). I dug over 60 targets in 2.5 hours. I got 5 silvers, 1964, 60, 52, and 47 D dimes and a 1942 P silver nickel(I was really happy about that as I knew how rare they would be). 5 wheats including a 1925. 2 Canadian pennies 1968 and 1952(an Elizabeth and a George). That weird claw thing was in the same hole as five pennies.

Again this area was hunted, but I am thinking that they cleaned out so much easy stuff, that they moved on and left those silvers behind.

My "beater" CTX performed well however, the TID were very strange:

Quarters:xx-45
silver dimes:xx-44
clad dimes:xx-43
copper pennies:xx42 or xx-43
wheats: xx-40 to xx-43
silver nickel:xx-12
clad nickels:xx-11 to xx-18

So it just goes to show you..........listen to your parents, they always know best! HAHAHAHA...........

Good going on the silver, 5 in a day is a great score!

Sorry to hear you had to use a CTX, I know how crappy they can be! Hahahahaha............

I think my crappy CTX has found me over 300 pennies and 15 silver in approximately 10-12 hunts this year.

I'm curious about the range of FE values you got on your non-ferrous targets. Did any of them exceed, say, 27?

Those conductive numbers look fairly normal to me. What was the ferrous number(s)

FE's were typical range 12-15 on the high end stuff 08-12 on nickels. I did have a 24-45 that turned out to be a copper nut.

A solid signal in two directions is a dig. So, I dig those deep aluminum screw caps even though they are a consistent 12-30.

I pay attention to the numbers, but the numbers do not always count as much as the signal sounds does to me. Following Andy's Boot Camp, I'm far more comfortable with the CTX now. It served more to bring me peace in my usage, it's not such a mystery anymore that I'm too hesitant to stick the digger in the dirt.

I guess I walked away still being a sound guy, but maybe a wee bit wiser :) And there's so many numbers under which gold does hide in the dirt.

I always look at my numbers, but still dig just about everything! LOL.....

12:02 is always foil, but I've heard that gold could live under that number as well.

12:16 pull tab, apparently so can gold.

12:41 to 12:44 is almost always a penny.......or a Canadian silver dime!

So that's why I dig just about everything, I hate missing good stuff.

Yep! I'm with you my friend! Whole lot of time on my knees - I guess praying for gold and sticking that digger in the sod :)

I do dig a lot of trash, but I think I kinda narrow that down a bit more just by listening to what the sound tells me.

As the day gets on and I get tired and want just one more coin, I will admit to passing over the target ID's that I know to be typically trash.

I convince myself that it was trash and I'm not missing anything, but I always finish my hunts on a coin (or a good target).

I figure this way I will feel like it was a successful hunt no matter how good or bad it was, rather than finishing off on trash which would leave me feeling like it was a bad hunt. LOL.....

Hey Geobound my friend, the CTX is a very capable machine - you pair it up with the quality of the sounds you hear, and you learn more than most before you ever stick the digger in the ground. I think you have the basics now, and putting all you've read/heard/or studied together and then you've got one beast of capability in your arms as you swing.

I do really believe that sound guys hear more than swing & look at numbers will ever understand. Put it all together and here we have the CTX :)

Personally, this is my dream machine - knew that well before I spent the bucks.

I really do not care whether others kick my butt on a hunt, it's just a matter of what the coil passes over anyway. I just love the science and capabilities!

Those are all in the normal range. Ground acidity and mineralization will alter the numbers a bit.

Two of the nicest engagement rings I've ever found read 12-02

Yup, the 12-16's will wear you out!

Usually, when I get a 12-41, it's a wheat cent. Copper memorials are 12-43 to 12-45. Clad dimes are almost always a solid 12-44. To me, it doesn't matter the minor differences in numbers. I'm going to dig those numbers all day long! I've found silver rings with those numbers too.

100% agree DSA, I don't care who beats me........well except my brother. There is always a battle between the two of us. LOL.....

I usually walk looking at the ground so I can see what's coming and listen for the good tones, when I get a good sound then I look at my screen.

You and I have talked about this before, but Canadian coins are terrible! The newer ones ring in as crap, so you have to take more chances. You also have to look at your VDI numbers more.

I had looked at the CTX before I got my AT Pro, but didn't want to spend the long dollars until I knew for sure I would stick with the hobby.

I had about 5 great years with the AT Pro (and still have it), but like you, I knew all along that the CTX was for me.

I run the standard coil, but am thinking that the smaller 5x10 will come handy in some of my tighter hunting spots.

Sounds like you, DSA and myself have a similar hunting style.

We will dig more trash than most I'm sure, but won't miss too much along the way.

I'm going to have to take my CTX across the border someday, just to see how much different your coins sound to mine.

Sure I find American coins, and sure I can do a test garden, but trips are always better!! LOL.......

Hunting a camp myself.....lake, fields, tons of coil time in this camp...so far I have tested different parts of the 30 acre camp....wow, finding memorials at 6" -7" in CLAY...late 50's on this camp, dont know hardly what to expect...I prefer older dirt....but fun none the less..

Glad you hit some pay dirt....very nice !! Congrats !!
