My progress to the end of 2018. Still a lot of wood to come off to get it slim like the originals from the Golden Age of long rifles circa. 1780-1820 or so.........................Daniel 146_3899.JPG 146_3900.JPG 146_3901.JPG 146_3902.JPG

Was this rifle made with a kit?

I wonder of an old musket ball of the same caliber could be shot out of this firearm.

Looking real nice. Any particular school being followed? (A Pennsylvania region or something?)
What is the ring on the stocks wrist?

And unsolicited advice here , don't drop the stock at this stage. (!)

Yes, a retired gent from Ontario sold these kits. When finished I will load a .530 diameter ball with a patch .018 thick and approx. 70 gr. of ffg black powder.

No particular school although Lancaster inspired. Lock is a copy of a Durs Egg. The "ring" on the stock is an elastic band holding the trigger guard in place as the guard will not be fully inlet until the wrist is slimmed down. I'll try not to drop it. LOL Thanks for the comment.......................Daniel

Boogaloo,
That is looking good! Will you use it for hunting since it is a .54 Cal?
I am presently building a Hawken for my brother in flintlock, also a .54. It is quite a job but after the first one I think it will get easier.

Daniel,
It looks loke the cheek piece is coming along just fine.
I also have that book by Peter Alexander. It's a good book. Maybe we need a rifle building forum. I don't know what it is but shooting black Powder is a lot of fun. I have been interested in it since I was about twelve years old but I didn't know anyone doing it at that time. A friend had an over and under rifle in .32 cal with side hammers. It was made in Pennsylvania for his grandfather. It was a fascinating rifle. If I ever get good enough I want to try making one like it but in .45 cal. --Jim

I have a question. I have a sawmill and cut walnut for gunstocks. So far, all modern guns. How long is your stock? From you tape measure is looks like 5'...?? I'd like to cut some stock blanks for BP rifles to have on hand. Thanks. Gary

Curly maple? Looks like the wood is going to be gorgeous once it has a finish on it. Nice work.

Beautiful job on the Long Rifle. I know you have to be proud and rightfully so. That was a lot of work, but it paid off.
