2 Months into flint and glass knapping

These are a few of the pieces I have made since Ive started 2 months ago. I originally started with novaculite white flint and obsidian but turned to glass when I ran through my supply. Looking to get new stuff soon. Let me know what you think? Mostly using copper and antler. With pressure flaking I have made my own antler ones that seem to work better then my copper one besides the fact that it wears down quicker. Any thoughts?

You are doing quite well. Love the glass heads. I see the notches are kicking you butt too! Nice recoveries though. Thinning early is the key to thin notches.

Yeah they were. Thinning was too at 1st. Decided to make my own pressure flakers last night and the points I made tonight notched much easier. The one you get with a kit really doesnt do well. I have decided that I dont like pressure with copper, antler and other tools work much better. I took some old upolstery awls and cut them down short then rounded and sanded them. Steel and aluminum of different thicknesses. Also took some shed antlers and sanded them down real thin. Much better. My thinning problem was caused by me putting too much pressure on the bottom of the stone. Once I figured that out it has gone more smoothly.

I have been trying flint knapping and er... wow !! You have to tell me your secret !! How did you get so well trained in a so short time?

To tell the truth it has been mostly youtube. There is a lot of good teachers on there but the best are paleomanjim and lamokaghost. A couple of other guys are great too. There are not alot of books to go off of but you do need to get the art of flintknapping. Its the only one worth it. Start with obsidian or novaculite. That to me is the easiest to work with. You are doing real good. On the notches try indirect punch style flakeing with an antler pressure flaker, it works real well once you learn how. Some cheap knapping material is TV picture tube glass and broken toilet tank lids.

You're ready to knap flint. Nice smooth faces with no hangers. If you want a good notching tool, get a box of horseshoe nails. Your biggest problem will be finding raw material in MD. Buy it or travel and look for it are your options if you want real flint. Gary

You are doing a lot better than I did two months in. Some people get it faster than others.

YouTube videos really are a great way to learn, but if you get a chance to visit a knap-in event somewhere, you'll be able to learn and stock up on stuff.
