Mona Lisa is smiling! New finds....1877 dime!
I found and hunted a new foundation on Sunday. And had a good day...including my first 1800's silver...a 1875 seated dime. Here what the foundation looked like on the 1879 map....and on the 1909 USGS map it's no longer there. Those are the best ones to hunt....less junk...more old relics. It really didn't take long to find it. I just followed the stream and it was there just like the map said it would be!
The first picture is of what the foundation looks like. It's hard to see but some newer garbage was dumped in the hole. And, of course, the dead tree dropped across it just to make it more difficult to hunt.
Almost every cellerhole has a barn to go with it. I actually found it before I found the house. Here's a picture of a cistern or a well that was in front of the barn. You can see the barn foundation in the background...at least where it was dug out.
Here's the iron dug up at the house. I don't know what that thing is at the right. Does anyone know? Here's a picture of the copper and brass. I found the toy gun under a tree. Finally, here the coins and buttons. The Seated dime is my first 1800's silver. It's dated 1875. The large cent is dated 1850. There's an indianhead that was practically on top of the ground.....but it was in pine needles and destroyed it. The dividers I found on another hunt. I thought they were pretty neat.
Thanks for looking.

When you get into a tight place and everything goes against
you till it seems you could not hold on a minute longer,
never give up then for that is just the place and time that
the tide will turn.

Re: Mona Lisa is smiling!
I would be smiling too.
Way to Go!
I have an 1874 atlas of Minnesota and Iowa. I use it to compare with a current plat map that shows the section lines. Most of these school houses no longer exist and the sites are usually in plowed fields. It isn't very often that you find silver though. Detecting in bean fields can be.

Hey, Iwearpro, welcome to the forum....I love your avatar.
You can try going to your library and look up atlases. Some of the publisher names of the old atlases are Beers, Everts & Stewart, J.A. Caldwell, and G.M. Hopkins. That's where got mine from....I just copied the pages I needed, and then supersized them so they're easier to read. Or you can try your local museum/historical society.
