AXE me what I found today!
I just looked at everyone’s finds for today… What a great weekend it’s been for everyone!
I’ve been off work for a few weeks (on leave) and wanted to get out to detect one last time before heading back… my hunting partner and wingman Tony couldn’t go, so I was on my own. Headed to one of my favorite spots that always produces and had a bad time for about an hour… found nothing at all. I decided to move a couple hundred yards to another spot and started doing real good!
I found two eagle buttons and a plain brass button… not to shabby! The eagles cleaned up real good and I’m happy they both have about 70 percent guilt left!

I also dug a buffalo nickel (1928), it’s very worn and not a rare date… which is cool because I scratched it on recovery… It has all four legs.

Found the average assortment of .47-70 casings and bullets, not a big surprise really. What was a surprise, and I only have a handful from this location, is an intact and unfired round. This .45-70 round has been carved to a point IMHO. Very cool.

I usually find harmonica reeds, but not this time. However, I did find this piece which is very interesting! It has three concentric slots and three (missing) reeds. I have no idea what instrument this was for… but it’s still cool. I'll probebly post this is the "What Is It" forum...

Holy crap! This was my most exiting find for the day! I was heading back to the truck to leave and this thing rang out as a quarter, so I was expecting anything but iron! Cripes… I was so excited! I pulled yet another chunk of iron out with absolutely no expectations and this wonderful axe head pops out into my hands… I couldn’t wait to call Tony!

Here are the rest of the finds laid out together, sans axe.

I packed up and headed to an old school down the road and pulled come clad and this cool watch fob. It’s a McCormick-Deering Farm Machines fob from a business in Great Falls, Montana. Seems to be some gold guilt on it, and it cleaned up real nice.

I left the school and drove to an abandoned farm house Tony and I have permission to hunt but haven’t gone to yet… just to take some pictures of it. And I took some other pictures too… hope you enjoy the scenery!

I had a great day, I hope you all did too. Taking my own pictures sucks… Thanks for looking!

Love the buttons!
Are you going to clean the axe head? It would be wild to make a new (historically accurate) handle for it.
...or is that a relic no no?
Anyway. Congratulations on a great hunt!

Thanks Ridley, I'm not selling it so I don't care if it's a no-no! 8)
I don't think I'll put a handle on it.
I will however clean and preserve it somehow and display it with my other stuff from this group of soldiers.

Jim,
Like Ivy said, you do some fantastic posts! Great photos, and great stories to go with each one. My pictures may be CSI grade, but your posts could be in National Geographic. Without the naked native women of course.
Great job on those buttons, and we can't wait to see what you find at that old farmhouse.
Congrats,

Great finds! I like that axe head, you might let it soak in distilled water for a few weeks, the rust will fall off doing so. I have a cannon ball that has been soaking in distilled water for months. Think I'm going to try preserving it with parafine wax. HH, Mike

Just distilled water? What about these guys with the electrical Dr. Kavorkian set-ups?
Even I can just soak something! Thanks for the advice Mike.
