Just wondering what everyone's favorite war movies are I like many but the most realisitic and best portrayed ones IMO are Downfall and Gettysburg. I like a lot of older ones but most of the 50-80's era ones tended to be cheesy and fake although entertaining. Downfalls a must for any WW2 buff, its the last days in Hitlers bunker and Berlin in April 45' based on a book by his last Secretary who died shortly before the film came out. But according to people who were there its perfect. The movies in German but American subscripts with great battle scenes and shows the chaos in Berlin as it realized it was about to be overran.

Somehow Gettysburg just happens to come up big on history buffs/md'ers. Great movie.
Ofcourse anyone who doesn't like Gunney Hartmann in Full Metal Jacket is missing something.
Seargent Stryker (John Wayne) in Sands of Iwo Jima.
Veronica Lake in So Proudly We Hail.
Can I count Best Years Of Our Lives?
Das Boot rings in high also.
84 Charlie MoPic, very scary.

Ofcourse the more technical, historically accurate the film the better I like it. So I have to leave some films out of any decent listing. Just couldn't see those guys walking around and talknig fairly noisily as the squad in Saving Private Ryan while just off the beach a few days in the back country there. A couple old timers told me they mostly crawled through the first few weeks of that invasion.

Worst movies? Pearl Harbor, Talk about literary license with history. Same goes for U-571

I kinda liked "To Hell and Back" with Audie Murphy. Pretty good fellow and quite scrappy for his size.

Saving Private Ryan of course.
The Band Of Brothers series was spectacular.
Full Metal Jacket(the first half...)

Most any WW2 themed movie from the 40s-early 60s I like.

no one said the great escape?

I did, that is one GREAT MOVIE! I could watch it over and over again. I hate it during Veterans Day or Memorial Day when they show war movies. I mean how many times can they SHOW MIDWAY? Very rarely you get to find a channel that has some REAL good war movies, especially the old ones!
