Hey Dano

Hey Dano i always wanted to ask an englishmans opinion on the movie Zulu. Its one my favorite movies, well acted, lots of action and fairly accurate historically, even though i spotted a few mistakes in it. I've studied the battle quite a bit, read countless books on it. I even have maps and time tables of the attack waves and positioning of the attacks. If you havent seen it sorry for asking, check it out you wont be disappointed .They had guts i know that. to them.

Re: Hey Dano

Never ask Dano for an opinion.. First off, he hasn't been to the movies in 40 years. Secondly, he doesn't even own a TV. Finally, he never visits this section, so you better send him a pm. :P

Re: Hey Dano

Spart's right you know..i never visit this section! :laughing9: Todays the first time sorry. Should have pm'd me.

Have i seen "Zulu"? lmao...every xmas since i was an egg! It used to be a great British tradition every xmas day...watch the queens speech, xmas dinner, watch "zulu". (sometimes they alternated it with a James Bond film. One was on in the afternoon the other at night.)

Anyhow, the film is an excellent adaptation of arguably one of Britains greatest ever battles. As you say, it does contain some myths and innacuracies but then most historical films do, they're made to cater to an audience.
However, it is basically a true depiction of events. This was Britains "Alamo". 150 men against 4,000 zulu warriors. The Victoria cross is our highest medal for bravery, and not easy to obtain. This battle gained eleven of them, and remains the highest presentation of crosses ever! Imagine 11 medal of honor's shared between 150 US marines in one battle..you get the idea?
There would possibly have been a few more awarded too, but the "posthumous" awards didn't start until some years after.

It remains a part of British culture in both film and historical versions. :)

You're lucky those 150 wern't at Yorktown or New Orleans eh? :tongue3:

Re: Hey Dano

Sorry, the cat just tripped in through the door..........
Was a little uncertain as to what ya'll thought ZULU was, as I am learning, I am not up on the MD'ers word terminology. Other than the guide Dano posted somewhere else, here. LOL! (thanks for that)

Interesting x-mas ritual you have there Sweden. Here in US, every Thanksgiving, we always play
Arlo Guthrie's, Alice's Resturant! For what that was worth.

as the cat slinks back out

Lol Pat. You'll get to know that most of what Spartacus, RJ and i talk about ..has very little to do with detecting or treasure. It's why we get into so much trouble! :laughing9:

Its like being a chef and having to go home nights to cook your own dinner. You soon tire of your own cooking, after reading and typing so many treasure hunting posts having your mind wander is a welcome. :laughing7:

Zulu, was and is a great film, also in my all time collection, just don't ask about "Zulu Dawn". It is set on Isandlwana, and was the precurser to Rorke's Drift, basically a major mess up by our guys, and a really BAD film.

Re: Hey Dano

Not a bad idea really Spart' mate. You know everyone follows me around to see what crap i've kicked off this time! :laughing9:

Yeah, Isandlwana was a total cock up by those in command...as usual! Still, 20,000 screaming lunatic zulus charging over the hill towards 1,300 (fighting) Brit's was a bit overwhelming.
Turned out to be our Pearl Harbor in Africa..It "woke the sleeping lion and filled it with a terrible resolve!" And a larger invasion ended that particular war quickly.
Another lesson in Britain being too over confident and underestimating an enemy! ::)

I don't know why, but you just reminded me of a scene from Blackadder series 4, where Blackadder recounts the day in Africa when he took part in the battle of Mboto Gorge against 10,000 Watusi tribesmen armed with kiwi fruit and very sharp mangoes :laughing7:

Re: Hey Dano

I am familiar with Black Adder, especially Rowan Atkinson :laughing7: My favorite Atkinson character is Mr Bean :tongue3: Also a big fan of John Cleese from Monty Python, and Fawlty Towers. Least we forget the Two Ronnies, and Benny Hill. :laughing7:

I don't think too many in the states get British comedy :dontknow: I for one, love it :hello2: I do think people here got Benny Hill... Jackie Wright was my little hero :notworthy:

Re: Hey Dano

The only reason i think Benny made it over there was because a lot of his stuff was "visual"..along with scantily clad ladies lol. The others are mostly "verbal".
If you really want a challenge on "verbal" British humour..try "Only fools and horses". One of our funniest ever shows.
(Also "open all hours" with Ronnie Barker from the two Ronnies and David Jason from fools and horses, and "last of the summer wine". Both are hilarious and i think you'll enjoy them too.)
