Town of Shermanville would be about 136
years old now.

Shermanville started out for me as a search
for a very small cemetery, (Channahon Grave
Yard some called it), found out that what
was left of it was paved over for a highway and
no trace exists. Buried in this plot were some
of the residents of the two generally forgotten
villages of Kankakee City and Shermanville.

Wanted to find the site of Shermanville.
Locating the site and perhaps being able to bring out
one artifact from where the town stood became a goal.

Not to be. I know about the town, the general store,
post office, some of the folk who lived there, its commerce,
but I have not been able to locate it. And the best anyone
can say is that it stood somewhere near the big bend near
where the Illinois River and Kankakee River join.

It was a very small town, like many, it came into being
and melted away ALMOST forgotten.

And that folks is the story of why Shermanville would
be about 136 years old, and why I use the tag
SHERMANVILLE ILLINOIS.

Sherm, you don't look a day over 130, I swear! ;)

Good history read. There are hundreds if not thousands of those little towns all across the country that time just swallowed up.

Great post, Sherm— and great that you're keeping the history of that town alive. Sounds a lot like one, now long gone, not far from where I grew up. Used to be near the Arkansas River... a little too near, as it turned out. Now half of it's under the river, and the rest is under soybeans and mud.

Great pic, Sherm ... good to get a face with the name. I know what you mean about the lost towns. I do a lot of grave hunting myself here in my neck of the woods. Old maps pinpoint the old places, but once you get there, there's a big cotton field or pea patch. Keep looking!

Sherm,

Have you tried using google earth to zoom in and maybe find some features that might indicate an old town/road etc? The sat. images are pretty good resolution of that area.

cheers,
