Best finds indeed! Those are some pretty special treasures! Got them all in a display cabinet yet? With that assortment I am sure you could make a beautiful display out of them. Congrats!

Hi Yarrum,

Yes, those are called "Phoenix Buttons" and are circa. 1820. The were made for King Christophe of Haiti for his military. Unfortunately, he was deposed in the early 1820 and committed suicide soon thereafter, before he received the buttons. Apparently, most of the buttons were purchased by a trader named Wyeth who sold them in the Columbia River area of Oregon. From there, the buttons ended up in many Spanish Mission sites along the West Coast of California. These were found near Mission San Jose, in Fremont, California.

Regards,

Rick

Hi Relicdude....

The piece I found which is similar to the pics you posted is a Spanish Mission Period cuff link, found near Mission San Jose in Fremont, Ca. It dates from the late 1700s to around 1830. I've also found similar buttons (called "hollow ball buttons" from the same period. Yours is a little different from the ones I've found in that yours has a flat back. These are always good age indicators from early sites in California.

Regards,

Rick
