My best find so far...

The date is in Roman numerals, ~ the coin is silver.

Found 9" deep; at the base of an ancient Australian River Gum tree.

1872 British Florin...

In 1851, the florin was redesigned in a most unusual way. The diameter was increased to 30 millimetres, and all the lettering on the coin was in Gothic script, resulting in it being known as the Gothic florin. The date was rendered in Roman numerals. The inscription on the obverse read (e.g.) victoria d g britt reg f d mdcccli ( F D – Fidei Defensor, defender of faith), while the reverse read one florin one tenth of a pound. The Gothic Florin was produced each year until 1887 (mdccclxxxvii).--from Wiki.

I've got an 1845 florin I have yet to clean up, I detected it at an old disused church, and it came out of its deep sleeping place...
It is almost mauve in color.

Hi Crusader, I came to find this coin by thinking that the tree was sooo old that someone HAD to have had a rest beneath it in the early days.
So I put the coil to the soil, and my Explorer II located it!
It was about 9" deep, and was stained by years of tannin from the trees bark...

Here's a couple of scanner images I just did quickly, ~ as you can see the coin is not cleaned...
This is how it came from its resting place, it was easily 10" deep or thereabouts.

I reckon it's a bit too dark to be left as it is, but I'll give it some CAREFUL thought before I do any further work...

Its a 1845 Halfcrown (not Florin), very nice find. Why clean it, I like oxidisation on silver. Proves it came from the ground.
