I know what it is, a pigeon leg band but.......Can anyone interlpret the information on the band?? It has NPA 40 F 45254.? Would like to return it to the owner if I can locate him/her.? They're probably wondering what happened to their pigeon.? Any help appreciated.? Monty

I just edited this post. After 61 years I can't spell pigeon! Monty

Re: Pidgeon leg band

BIRD WAS HATCHED IN 1940, It's 65 Years Old ;D

http://www.npausa.com/

HERE Ya Go

For example the band may read-->NPA 03 ABC 1234

? - NPA - is the national organization that has registered the bird, in this case the National Pigeon Association. The band can also have AU, IF, CU, ATB, NBRC, or IPB in this position.?

- 03 - is the year the bird was hatched and banded/registered.?

- ABC - is a letters representing the affiliated pigeon club the band is registered to (no two clubs have the same registration letters - and they have one, two or three letters).?
? - 1234 - A one-up number unique to each pigeon based on the club letters. Now that you understand how to read the band, you can go back to our band list to find the club that the bird you found belongs to.

I had figured out by looking up the NPA that the bird was hatched in 1940! Must be a very old band huh? Most likely the former owner is deceased assuming he/she was an adult at the time. The band appears to be made of copper. Where is that band list you posted about Jeff? I couldn't find one on the NPA website. Monty

You'll find it in their LOST & FOUND.

? I'd say the Owner was at LEAST 15 at the Time But Probably in his 20's.

I got a reply from the NPA and they gave me the name of a contact person. They also said the 40 really meant 04 or 2004 so it isn't as old as we thought. I'll try contacitng that person this evening. Monty
