One of My Most Prized Finds of All Times

Little is known about the 3lb cannon being used in
    the Civil War.

Could I have been destined to find this?

Over 50 years ago, I was a teen involved in a historical
organization called the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
It was the Centennial of the Civil war. We were involved
in firing an original Civil War 3bl cannon many times... It
was a brass Napoleon cannon from the Revolutionary
    War period.

We used cut off orange juice cans which were made of
metal back then. We filled them with different stuff in them
that would not scratch tha barrel.

I asked the owner of the cannon why we used the orange
juice cans. He told me that they were almost exactly like
the shot canister cups used by the Confederates. But the
ones made by the Confederates were usually copper. He
showed me a cup, which along with the cannon belonged
to his grandfather. His great grandfather acquired the cannon
when he inherited property that had been a Confederate
training camp before the Civil War. That was where He lived.

About a year ago, I was searching at the bottom of a hill,
and on private property. The hill was across from a shallow
river crossing on the Arkansas River. I think artillery had
been installed on the hill, because I have found some
evidence, including this shot canister cup.

This is truly rare. Just try to Goggle it.

If you find anything, please let me know.

I put the musket balls in for the photo. It will hold about 70
    or 80.

Hope you got something out of that,

Very cool Tabdog. I'll bet many of these have been found but misidentified as cups. I love it when obscure bits of hard information like this get revealed which otherwise might be lost to the vast majority of us. I only wish this wonderful find could have been saved as a "test" on the "what is it forum"!

If I were you, I would store it in a way that allows it to be identified easily for what it is, or maybe donate it to a museum. Someone could easily think it to simply be trash and then it would be lost for good.
