Seeing those buckles the first thing that comes to mind is all the people who often state just how difficult it is to find a Colonial copper in their area... and I believe it's the truth because I hunt quite old sites and have never dug one of the early buckles in the first picture.
I fit that statement to a tee...... :D not many coppers around these parts. But man not found buckles like that either.Thought I was doing something with these old boys............But I've been schooled :laughing7: It's weird how things can be so different just a 100 or so miles away.

Wow Bill, perhaps the best collection of early colonial buckles found in US that I have seen, and yes that last buckle is a killer find!

Don

Thanks Don. That buckle in the last pic came from a trash pit at the hammered silver site and I actually eyeballed it. Hopefully I would have found it with the detector anyway, but it was pretty cool to see that laying on top of a shovelful of dirt that I had just thrown out from 3 ft down in the pit. Here's a pic of it right after picking it up from the dirt pile along with some of the other items found in the pit that day.

My favorite one is this one: found deep in the sand under the cliffs on the south coast of
"The Ilse of Wight" UK. (l like to think it was owned by a Pirate) it is about 3inches in diameter, and looks as it is low grade silver. the tang is very rusty.

Here's my silver shoe buckle. It was made by Thomas Northcote probably in the 1780's. There is a British Hallmark of the Lion passant indicating that it is sterling silver and his initials TN. It is about the size of a postage stamp.

Any attempts at removing that encrustation?
You might have a beauty under there.
Ive found some silver with the same crust, it should crumble right off.
what is underneath can be hit or miss...
Copper usually fares less well.
One silver that came out in good shape was a 1620s 4reale cob.
shows that even silver that's been in SW a LONG time can survive in that crust.
My encrusted Cob looked just like these examples of cookie coins,
from crushed shell layer under mud.
Best wishes, Herbie.

Found this one in Michigan, I've been told it is an early French Buckle, but not much beyond that.
