Hello Crazyjarhead,
I had to post on whatsit to find what they were, the backs look like the pix below,
and they were used to cover ladies shoe buttons in the victorian era.

I found one once it's got a buffalo on it, now if I can only find it then i'll post a photo. I just thought it was a buton cover for a shirt, never even thought about old shoes. :-[
