Hammered silver caches
I probably consider this my best group of finds ever, and it will be impossible to top. Initially found a scattered cache of hammered silver coins from 1563 to 1640 in a field near a very early homesite here in SE Virginia 2 years ago. In a later hunt I dug 8 more from the a single hole about 150 ft from where the first ones were found. And a few random ones turned up later for a total of 23. These included sixpences, shillings and 2 huge half crowns. I'm getting ready to return to this site armed with a GPX-4000 a buddy of mine lent me, and hopefully a few more will show up. Maybe even a hammered gold. Wish me luck!

Re: Hammered silver caches
Amazing! If they would of been found here in England it would be an outstanding discovery, but for you to of found them in America now that is unreal!
Hope you are able to pluck a few more out of the ground on your next hunt.
Good luck & HH...

Re: Hammered silver caches
I'm pretty new to this site and I've never seen a hoard like that found before!
Bill, do you think the coins were simply buried by the owners of the homestead to keep them out of enemy hands? Or was this a stash that might have been stolen and buried for later retrieval?
I guess the answer is . . . that it could have happened in any number of scenarios.
Thanks for your post!
Dave
I love hunting old relic sites . . . as I feel
the imprint of past lives often linger there.
I view relic sites as windows to the past, sacred places
in a way, yet at the same time attesting to the reality
that the past is still very much a part of our today!

I've done a bunch of research on this site, and have uncovered some very interesting info. I believe the owner of the property where the coins were found was a supporter of Charles I of England who was overthrown and beheaded in 1649 during the Engilsh civil war. Many of his supporters fled the country and some headed to America to escape punishment or death. Some of these folks were quite wealthy and brought their hoards of gold and silver coinage with them. So I'm sure the coins were buried at the site for safekeeping. Additional research revealed that in the early 1700s a slave found a very large hoard of gold and silver coins in an abandoned home across the creek from where I found my coins. The owner had apparently died unexpectedly, and nobody knew the whereabouts of his fortune. I actually have permission to hunt that site too, but have found only one 17th century cob. Anyway, I feel there are more coins at the site where I found the others, and that is why I've borrowed a GPX-4000 so I can go deeper and maybe find a larger hoard. Be fun to try anyway. Hope to get out there soon and I'll post any success I may have.

Be sure to read about the "spread" when trying to locate the main cache on Sergei's metaldetectingworld.com site.
So many yards, so little time!
