One of my best finds was an old pouch with a lock of hair, some unidentified newsclippngs, some dozen Civil War brass buttons that were marked "CSN" and made in England on the back sides, (Confederate States Navy) that I found here in South Florida. 8)I hid the pouch with contents in my house somewhere and have yet to find them. I am moving in 4 days. I dont even have pictures. :'( If I find them, I will post. So far no luck. They may be again lost...4 days to find. :(

Re: CW Housewife Lost, Found, Lost, and Found Again

The CSN navy button is worth around $400-$800, the artillery $200-$500, the Va. probably $100-$200, the Union Navy buttons being the least valuable. This is just a quick guess by looking at the completed listings on Ebay, i'm no expert for sure. Nice finds and i'm glad you finally found them, that's a nice little pouch/purse thingy that their in too, looks like a period piece.

Thanks Rob. Im hoping the non-dug condition will increase the value. The gold gilt appears to be intact on the CSN officers button. Any other southern made tin-back I ever saw had a rusted back. This Artillery button is mint. ;D

Here are pics of the news clipping remains. One side appears to be a foreign language. The other side appears to list states. :dontknow: I may post in the What Is It Forum.

Thanks Mike. It never ceases to amaze me what can be found in trash. I wish I had a camera back in the day. I wish I had back all the items I sold.

Is it pigskin? It does seem very soft. Do you think it (the purse) is CW era?

BCH,
I dug one of those CSN Navy buttons a few years back with the same rare back mark.
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,217606.html

Mine appraised at $1400-$1500 back then and yours is even BETTER condition!!!

All I can say is CONGRATS to you. :hello2: Fantastic post and relics.

Wow thanks Doug! Its sounding better. ;D I thought I found 2 of them but my memory fails me lol. I couldnt even recall where I hid them back in 2006 when I posted the original thread. :icon_scratch: Im just glad my sister found them. Im thinking the A button may bring a thousand in mint condition.

Im trying to figure why these buttons would be all together in the same pouch. I also think the news clipping would have explained it, but its "gone with the wind." :(

Thanks kuger. Its all true lol. I cant believe I dumped them out on the ground and actually went back days later and found them. Im sure I missed a few. I remember actually returning to the site again and finding a few more.

I also remember being broke down in the middle of nowhere and spending a Spanish reale in a payphone >:( but thats another story and this is one with a happy ending. :D

Here are 2 more of the Union Navy buttons.

Re: CW Housewife Lost, Found, Lost, and Found Again Today

My computer is acting up and it shuts down when hot and may not come back on for days. Thanks for all that responded. Dont forget to rate the thread. Im looking for a positive ID on the pouch. It may be pigskin. The frame is steel. Anyone seen anything like it? Does the string on the hair look CW era?

I cant date your pouch for certain BigCy,as I have never found a complete one but I can say I have dug the exact metal pieces of that one in 1850's sites,so I would say it is definetly period!!

Congrats on some very nice buttons. They are in very good shape and should be worth quite a bit.

Nice pics too.

BCH,
They look like identical back marks to me. I'd say you have the real deal for sure, only yours is WAY finer than my dug button. I think Santa came early.
You have my BANNER vote for sure. Great story, and fantastic relics. :occasion14:
Congrats to you,
Doug
