1835 - Coldbrook Nail & Spike Factory Foundation Remains

Hello there,

My name is Richie Ellis from Saint John NB and am a novice treasure hunter and independent researcher of my cities heavy industrial history. I have been at it for about a year give or take and its been such a very rewarding experience that I find myself becoming obsessive with the places I research. One of my most rewarding places I ever stumbled on was this place, a 175 yr old Factory Foundation.

The supplied picture is of the foundation that is still there from 1835 when it was a grist mill. William Scoville, a a very savy business man, seeing the changes in industry decided to use the grist mill location and turned it into a nail factory, one of the worlds leading supplier's for spikes and nails etc. This is just one of the many many things I have found down there. Its very hard to get people to be interested in this stuff. None of my friends or family care much about history but I believe you have to track it down to understand why things are the way they are in this era.

Its good to find a forum for people just like me.

Welcome aboard man not many people can understanad us I am getting ready to go through a divorce cause the wife says I waste alot of my time metal detecting rather than do this or that oh well it will get better as the days go on. Maybe one day someone will come along who understands us all .. but till then HH and enjoy the forum it is very educational

Hey thanks for the reply Freddy, I appreciate the welcome. I'm sorry you are about to go through a divorce as well. I know the feeling you get when you have found something new and exciting, it can be addicting. I find what works for me is going out when my wife works in the day, that way I have alot of time to search and hunt and when she comes home I suspend my hobby ( though its hard as its all I think about usually ) . We cant help who we are Freddy thats for sure, no matter what happens we are always going to go out and chase down history and seek for treasure.

A Horse Shoe I found on the ground near a tree and bush that I think was once a machine shop floor of some kind.

An actualRail-road spike ( i think ) that I yanked out of the ground when it caught my eye

The AD is what this place offered for services back in the day

The pic of the man is James Domville, who was an owner of this place but went bankrupt and a fire decimated the place in 1904 I think.
