Musket Ball,with teeth marks

Hi all
I sometimes metal detect at an old indian village of Queen Cathrine`s Town, (now Montour Falls N.Y.) wiped out and burned to the ground Aug.1779 by The Gen.Sullivan/Clinton campain to break the Indian/British ties to wipe out all their food corn,squche,apples ect. used frather east by the British/Indians .
I find many musket balls. but this is my best it has teeth marks on it . Found with my Teroso ToltecII last fall.

I got at least a dozen chewed ones
I think it is cool - makes them more personal
some just have one bite mark - which might be from holding their next shot
when I used to shoot blackpowder - a lot of times i would hold my next shot
in my teeth
ones that are really chewed - we can only wonder
did they have a bad tooth
- did they have a wound and were biting down on it
were they bored and were chewing on it like we chew on gum
were they hungry and chewed on it to occupy their mind to distract from the hunger

here are a few chewed from colonial spots
I have more with tooth indentations on just the top and bottom of ball
which would be the ones I think were being held in their teeth as their next shot
I got them in display cases all over the house
these here are ones that got chewed pretty good
the one I like is the flattened out piece that looks like it would fit your pallet
and had been chewed for some time

That is a cool find. I have found some here in Idaho that were pretty well chewed. Gary, I have hunted the site you mentioned back in the 80's, I'm from Erin, NY but have lived in Idaho for a long time. If I remember right I dug out a fire pit there that had a lot of musket balls and a copper dinner plate. There was lengths of lead wire in there that a friend, Kenny Briggs owner of "Longrifles and such" gun shop in Elmira, said were used to measure out the lead for musket balls. One length = one musket ball. Anyway nice find and good luck, Niffler

Yes it a great place to hunt i have found so much silver coins, 3 leged pean pot still had melted lead in it, large cents,Britsh buttons, and history in that big yard the place was built in 1860 and is now N.Y Fire Acadmey State porperty, i have been hunting on and there for 40 yrs. now.
I found a gold and black onyx grad.pendent of there dated 1872 tried to donate it to the Montour Falls Musem they told me that they would just put it away in a box thats where i keep it at home, so i still have it home.
It is state propety now and there is a State Police sub. st. in the building.... i still hunt there and the cops must think i work there ,they just wave at me.

They were given to surgical patients to bite. (just one possibility)
About your medallion, you were fortunate to be informed about the museums plans.
that happens to a lot of donations to Hist. societies and museums,
boxed up and filed, (or maybe taken for personal collections)
Been there, done that, thankfully my donation is now on display.
I'll throw in my saltwater (no Patina) chewed ball, HH All!
