I found this in Central Iowa, next to an Indian fire pit that became exposed as a result of high water and wave action. It is a silver spoon locket of the type traded to Native Americans in the late 1700s and very early 1800s. I have found photos of similar lockets on museum sites. It appears to have been treasured, it shows signs of wear and repair.
The soil was very sandy where I found this. From what I read, it was intended to be used to hold face paint or some other valued item. There were several other fire pits that were also exposed. I found one arrowhead in the vicinity on another hunt, maybe 200 ft away from where I found this, it was archaic and not a beauty.
We found little else around this old Indian campground. A half mile away I found a broken Dalton and my buddy found a drill made from a Dalton. I miss hunting artifacts in Iowa and Missouri, still go out when I am back there.
