I'm a frequent traveler to Europe--always into the clubs myself. I thought it was a modern term as well. Great token. You might want to see what the O.E.D. says about the origin of the word "club." If it says the term is more modern, then perhaps you have some interesting evidence to contribute to the history and evolution of the English language. From that vantage point, it is great that your find is dated.
