How are people finding clay pipes? I assume you went MDing for everything else, but how did you come across the clay pipes? I have seen then in some other posts too.

At every colonial site I hunt I try to find the trash pits. Sometimes they're easy and sometimes not so much. These pits usually contain brick, iron, oyster shells, pottery and glass frags, and sometimes pipe stems and bowls. I wrote an article a while ago for a detecting magazine about how I go about locating these pits. If you're interested send me a PM with your email address and I'll forward a pdf copy of the article to you.
