I can't even comprehend finding anything in this country that old except the dirt, rocks, and dinosaur fossils :) GREAT FIND!!

What is something like that worth, besides bragging rights?

Beautiful find!!

An idea just struck me, looking at this coin. The motifs, the overall design, seem remarkably similar to certain ones from the Himalayas / North India region. If I ever get around to writing my own rendition of "Forbidden Archaeology" I suppose I'd have to follow that thread some more.

The UK has some real history behind it with layers upon layers of civilization. We in the US, on the other hand, are a baby country with comparative no history. Heck, our oldest coins are new in that respect. Basically, we've barely began
our history-making. Happy hunting over there, and over here!

Very nice find. If you followed our (Dad & I) posts, you will see we had 2 blank years for Celtic Silver until this year. That gives you a far idea of how rare they are to find (generally speaking). Now yours is a spinks no.396 & in 2010 it books at £50 in Fine & £175 in V.Fine so it suggest its not very rare.
However, looking at Van Arsdell it seems that there is not a perfect match although it looks to be a variant of VA875-2:
Celtic Coin Index
There was about 30 examples, so if this is the type, then yours would be classed as Rare I think, rather the V.Rare. But as a variant, I believe you need an expert opinion like Philip de Jersey.

BIG CONGRATS - I will vote banner!

Nice coin:thumbsup: Corieltavi Silver Half Unit, this type is associates with the...Proto Boar Wheel Type...Spink 399, VA 862-1; although there is not the exact same coin in spinks, the type is not classed as rare, rather just a variation of the proto Boar Wheel type.

But you already knew this.:laughing7:

Thanks, I started with fractional units based on the size of the coin on his finger. I then ruled it out as VA looks nothing like it & nor did Spinks. However now you point it out its slightly better than VA875-2.

thanks for lookng in on for me fellas.
i've recorded it on UKDFD.
they have said it is VA 860-1; ABC 1791; BMC 3212.
which doesn't mean a great deal to me if i'm honest.
but if it makes it rarer, all the better.

cheers,
shaun.

Celtic Coin Index
At the time of the old database, only 4 were recorded. So without knowing the rate at which the PAS has been adding to it, I would guess yours might be the 10th? If you decided to record it properly, which now takes ages, instead of a 5 minute email!!!
