Rare Coin Trifecta...over 5 years! Let's see your scarce or rare finds!

Not many people are lucky enough to dig an actual rare coin. Even less have dug more than 1. Two weeks back I was lucky enough to dig my THIRD rare coin (R-5 or better), and I was wondering how many, like myself have been fortunate enough to have dug a scarce coin, R-3 or better on the Sheldon Rarity Scale.

Below are my prized rare finds, showing most recent first:

1788 Ryder 5 Vermont Copper (R-5) that I dug last week,

1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime that I dug a few years back (R-5)

1789 Half Reale IV over III, NG Mint (R-6 or better?)

Thats awesome! What kimś of placem do you hunt to find these? My rarest coin find is a 1918 Merc lol. I got Into this hobby to find coins but I have had better luck with relics and jewelry thus far.

sweet coins Neil! here's a few of my rare finds which include coins & relics.
1)1793 Chain cent with abbreviated AMERI. reverse
2)very early 1 piece Connecticut militia button only 4 i think known to exist
3)very early 1 piece diplomatic button
4)pewter Revolutionary War USA continental army button(bad cast)
5) all of my 1789 George Washington Inaugural buttons
6) M.TIDD WOBURN counter stamped large cent see attached explanation & articles why rare.not worth a ton but rarity wise it's cool

I've actually dug a lot of rare stuff, many of the items having good value, but certainly nothing compared to what a good American coin would be worth. For coins I have two out of the Charlton Colonial token book that have about 12-14 known. And for buttons, at the time I dug them they were incredibly rare. The larger American collectors had neither, and for one it was the same image in all the books, and maybe there was a few more that existed. The other I believe I was the only private person to have one, at least to own one and know what it was. Most of those finds go back quite a few years and the buttons have lost some rarity, but the coins have remained about the same. The coins have actually increased in value, but the buttons dropped off substantially. I think many of us have dug very rare finds, but again it all depends what it is. It's very difficult to find the right item in great condition, but when you do, cha-ching!

1797 Draped Bust LC, no stem on wreath variety (Sheldon 133)

Here's mine. Quarter cut by the Planter's Bank in New Orleans around 1814 and counterstamped as emergency coinage for the state of Louisiana. The early "PB in rectangle" stamp is always stamped over by a later "PB in chain links" counterstamp...that is on every example known except the one I dug. This is also the only known example with both the "Nouvelle Orleans" and the PB stamp on the same side. A barely overstruck PB in rectangle sold for over $17,000.00 at auction last summer. Mine was cut from an 1810 8Reales.

here is a R-3 Fugio Newman 4-E. found in a coin spill a few years ago







a 1774 Machin Mills R-6 Vlack-3-74A. from the same coin spill







here is an R-6+ Fugio (Newman 13-N.) found in the same coin spill a few yrs ago







and finally a 1787 Connecticut copper R-7 Miller 37.6-B. (maybe 5 to 8 known) i picked up last year.

Fantastic colonials! Fugio Cents are high on my list, but the chances of finding one in these parts is slim! Thanks for sharing.

I hope I'm eligible to post now Neil. I know this stuff isn't maybe as rare as some of the stuff you guys posted but here goes. It's been a pleasure seeing this stuff and I just finished my first year so hopefully in a few more I'll be able to post some items that rival you guys. Thanks for looking 1652 NOE 29 PINE TREE SHILLING 1664 Potosi mint COB Last quarter of 18th century Patriotic Political Button(possibly unique) Not sure why this gun barrel posted and I can't seem to remove it. The gun barrel is awesome so no need to fret. That Pine Tree may not be as rare as some of the other finds in the thread, but it's been on my list since around 1969! Thanks for posting!
