Rare Coin Trifecta...over 5 years! Let's see your scarce or rare finds!

Not many people are lucky enough to dig an actual rare coin. Even less have dug more than 1. Two weeks back I was lucky enough to dig my THIRD rare coin (R-5 or better), and I was wondering how many, like myself have been fortunate enough to have dug a scarce coin, R-3 or better on the Sheldon Rarity Scale.

If you're part of the Club, post your photos!

Below are my prized rare finds, showing most recent first:

1788 Ryder 5 Vermont Copper (R-5) that I dug last week,

1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime that I dug a few years back (R-5)

1789 Half Reale IV over III, NG Mint (R-6 or better?)

You may think it's funny to post from past auctions, but this coin was found in my area 10 years back by a member of the local club. The photo was taken by Don in SJ.

The coins you both show are different coins... He did not say he found it, just says its his rarest American coin... His is not a dug/found coin. His is a Unc coin with original luster and toning... His is a museum piece!

Both great coins!

It was actually meant to be a joke, I actually altered the date of the coin in photo shot to 1192 :laughing7: and the tone of the coin, but it seems people can't take a joke these days.

I did not notice the date alteration but knew it was not a dug coin... Yes and you should be able to joke... :)

Love the variety there! 2 GWs, 2 Rev War, great looking plate, a rare Blacksmith, and early lg cent to boot. I can't even pick a winner out of those, but my top 3 would be the plate, BS, and GW-GW.

My best are quite different, but what is the same is there is variety and it makes it all the better.

You will definitely have your day buddy! It will be when you least expect it. Prob not your best signal. All of a sudden your heart will skip a beat and it'll be hard to breathe. You will say "no way" over and over and over. Then you will put it in your special keeper case reserved for those lifetime finds. After about an hour you will physically have to look in there just to make sure it really happened and you weren't dreaming. It's an incredible feeling. One I wish everybody could experience

Yep, here is one of those for me, only it happened a little different. That day was just the average day out for Ironhorse and myself, dug some holes, had a couple of old coppers, a few buttons, maybe a relic, but nothing great. On the way home we had planned to make one last stop, and had a field in mind, but when I seen a place we hadn't been to for years was plowed, I said let's hit that instead. So we hunted for a about 30-40 minutes, IH getting an RP fairly soon, but I didn't dig much for targets except for when I took a little walk up a slope in the field, and that was the 10 minutes before we left. One of those targets was a small disc, but I could see there was something on it, and my gut feeling at the time was maybe an 1800s foreign coin, likely European. So I threw it in my pouch, hunted maybe 5 more minutes, then IH walked up and it was getting dark, so we left. On the way home I thought a little about the coin, and even what it turned out to be actually crossed my mind... but I immediately discounted it because I thought the size was incorrect. Needless to say once I got home and starting cleaning it up a little I was pretty blown away with what I had. So unlike Abe I didn't have to check my find container in the field just to make sure it had happened, but I did grab my book and had to match letter by letter just to be sure I was reading it right. :)

Nope... got a decent offer for it, and since it had a hairline crack I let it go. Not long ago a nice high grade one came up for auction and sold for about 40k so too bad the ground has such an effect.

Well I don't blame you then. Didn't realize that was the one. We have similar attitudes. If I found something that was valuable but was in danger of getting worse in condition why not let it go. I would rather upgrade some equipment than be left with a worthless broken coin/button

I was over the edge with the offer, but the crack definitely sealed it for me. I have no regret.

The old "ground effect"! My half dime would have gone for $20K if it wasn't a dug coin! Of course if it wasn't found in the ground it would have cost a pretty penny!
