Let's See The 1500 and 1600s Coins Dug In The US

After seeing the post by button king of his 16th century Lizzie it really got me wondering. How many hunters in the states and Canada have found a 1500s coin? I have a good friend here in Maine that found a cut 16th century silver and he's found a Jeton as well(I know a Jeton isn't a coin.) so I wanted to see some of these. I figured I'd add in the 17th century coins cause I think it'd be a pretty small list if not....and I love seeing these early ones. So bring em on guys and gals. You've seen mine so I won't bore you with those again. Since they still haven't really gone away lol.
I wish I could change the title to include my Canadian brothers. Of course I want to see yours and apologize for the title

Man there's some crazy nice early coinage on this thread. Very happy to see them all. You ever wonder how many are still in the dirt???? I know I do

Had a similar conversation with Ironhorse on the way to our site yesterday. I said wouldn't it be interesting to see the best 25 buttons that are in the ground here.

Yeah I always think about that stuff. How close is the nearest Mass silver. How close is the nearest Rev War button. What's the best signal I've not dug? That Luckenbooth brooch was a terrible signal. It was deep and in some weird highly mineralized Oceanside soil. A couple years ago that would still be in the ground. Now it basically all comes up. Even some iron signals that seem deep and show high numbers.

More incredible coins! The 17th century stuff is just special in my opinion. It's tough to find. Jim those buttons are certainly worthy. I have never found one. That's a nice collection

IMO, almost anything from the 17th century ought to make banner. There were less than 200,000 people in all of the colonies put together. Sure not all of us have opportunities at finding this stuff but its not like there are any decent maps that can put us onto these sites and the chances of finding coins, buckles, even buttons is not guaranteed even if you do find one. A lot of the 17th century finds were most likely lost a little later but even early 18th century stuff is no easy find.

One of the Hoover Boys got a 1527 Q.E. I. I can't remember which episode it was, but it sure was fun to watch.

I love this thread but only have one coin from the 1600's. I know most of you have already seen it but I want to be part of this thread! Here is my Noe-16 Pine Tree Shilling that I found on 6/11/17! 18814336_10209321218691077_6990423850541621481_n.jpg 19105701_10209321219051086_7146193852843806294_n.jpg PINE TREE IN THE WOODS 1.gif

Help with new coin found on Oak Island

The Lagina Brothers will be introducing a new coin found on Oak Island this Season on the show "The Curse of Oak Island".

Oak Island - Coin Season 5.jpg

Does this appear to be a Gold or Silver Coin?

Does anyone know how long a 17th Century Coin could have been in "Circulation"?

Were there 17th Century Coins still in use in the 18th Century?

"Coinage in America

In 1675 Mexico was finally authorized to mint gold, producing its first gold cobs in December 1679, Lima minted its first gold in 1696.
The silver coins of the 16th century bore an irregular row of dots near the rim, which became more regular during the 17th century as gold coins took on a rounder, standard shape. The circle of dots (cordoncillo) was placed closer to the edge. Silver coins followed the gold in adopting these improved details, but the piece of eight did not show a clear outline until 1709."

Here's my 1600s coins, I'm lucky enough to have 5. All found on cape cod, MA. I found my first three or four years ago with my $200 whites coin master. I didn't even have an ID on the coin until last year when I came across Jim Bailey and his amazing research and found out that my mystery coin is a 17th century commasse of Yemen. Since then I have found four more. What I believe to be a 17 century one reale cob? Two William III (one I believe to be counterfeit because it isn't round) and a liard de France. IMG_4094.JPG

Not easy to tell from that pic but it looks like a very worn copper coin that been subjected to the elements fir a very long time. I have watched Oak Island and observed the ground and trees that are in the area. That type of area will be hard on copper coins. If a silver or gold coin comes out of there it will look much different. Silver coins that have been in the dirt fir a long time will have a black patina or dark toning. I can show you a couple of early silvers that I have dug with the very dark toning if you’d like. Gold will come out looking like gold 98% of the time. When coins come from the water they are going to look different.
17th century coins certainly would have been in circulation in the 18th century. There’s no great rule to length of circulation with coinage but many would have circulated fir a very very long time. I have dug very early coins that are almost worn slick and I have dug early coins that I know for a fact only circulated a few years. I know this because these 1749 coins were shipped to what would become the US directly from the mint and I know approximately when the site ceased to exist. A few of these coins have basically zero wear. This is an example of that.

This coin only could have circulated for maybe 20 years at most. It also came out of well draining sandy soil beside a river.
