My wife and I were asked to clean out an old family friends cabin recently as the cabin and property has sold and the contents needed to be removed. Due to some serious time constraints, we reluctantly agreed to take on the task. We were allowed to do whatever we wished with the contents as sort of an incentive.

During the clean up I could not help to wonder if this man had some sort of stash. Being that he was a teenager during the Great Depression, it certainly seemed within reason. As we neared the end of the clean up, I was just cleaning up some bits and pieces from the loft area behind his bunk. After grabbing a small box of old vacuum attachments, I noticed a small old wooden box sitting there and at first made no mind of it since everything you touched in the place was old and neat. Continuing to clean up misc bits from the floor, I reached and grabbed the box figuring it was empty. It was HEAVY! Ok I thought, this must be some more misc hardware as he had a huge collection of very old cigar boxes all neatly organized and labeled with misc hardware items. So I set the box back down and began to slide the lid open....Whoa! As I began opening the box I saw the coins and immediately got chills and shut the box. Took a deep breath and walked it down to my wife to show her.

I have not gone thru the contents until right now. In fact, I decided to begin writing this post before going thru it so that we could kind of all do it together:wink:

So I am going to pause writing this and get the box. I will take pictures as I go here...

Wow...OK so it is going to take me some time to go thru all of this. I think what I will do is lay everything out and make an inventory of everything. I will also buy some coin sleeves to put them in. Hopefully after I get everything inventoried, you guys (the experts) can give me a clue as to whether any of them are "key" dates because I have no clue.

Hope you enjoyed this, I need to get busy!
Take care and happy hunting!

If that was in the open....just think what may be hidden....... or not :tongue3:
The Kennedy halves and the red line zip lock shows that the box has seen some modern times activity most likely by someone other than
the teenager from the great depression of 1929.

Great find! :icon_thumleft:

So the reason for the clean up and impromptu estate sale was because the cabin and property is changing hands. As for detecting the surrounding area, I am sure there will be no problem. I will let you know when that happens. As for the cabin, I did not have the opportunity to take pictures but I did get a couple that I used for the Craigslist ad for the sale. Unfortunately tnet is not allowing me to upload the pictures....working on that. As for the box of coins, I was going to put them all in sleeves but thought it better to just leave them in the box as found for now. As far as the original owner, he is still alive. He is doing good and turned 99 in May. Thanks for your warm comments and it was such a pleasure sharing this with you all.

I'm with the others. If that box was left inside, I'd be hitting some landmarks ( big trees, boulders, etc.) outside with a detector. Chances are there could be more.

That is an AWESOME find! Good for you:headbang: Sooooooo.....any update yet?

Unfortunately I have missed my opportunity to hunt the land as it has changed hands. After the new owners settle in I will pursue a possible permission. We will see. Take care!

Wow! Once in a lifetime find, congrats! If I found that I'd grab it, run into a secluded dark corner somewhere, where nobody can see me and hide for days.
