Thanks for starting this thread, IP. I look forward to seeing the future posts. Here is a button I found last fall within a few feet of a WW II Navy whistle ("USN 1944"). In looking at Albert's book I thought the button could be an early Coast Guard button but not sure.

I'm not a button guy. Seems to be lots of Anchor buttons out there that look very similiar. Can anyone help with this one? Has a nice patina to it and rust on the back.

Obviously not the best photographer either.

First a thank you to Iron Patch for starting this thread.

I dug a tin back Marine Corps coat a while back but have yet to get a definitive date period for it as there is no available record of tin back MCs being made that I am aware of.

An assumption was made that the tin back was a civilian commemorative since tin back would easily corrode in salt environment. Typically civilian copies lack the detail of the original or military issue.

Another assumption was made that since it was tin back it would not date to the civil war period but there were civil war tin back buttons, particularly on the confederate side.

I get the general feeling that the tin back I dug is a post Civil War since it's face design falls in line with some post war Horstmann's I have dug.

If anyone has any reference or link to tin back manufacture of the MC I would appreciate a link. Here is the tin back flanked by Horstmann's.
