I have found two. The first one is a coin weight that I found on a French & Indian War site. I had a Pharmacist friend (since passed) who had a complete set in a small wooden box with an identical weight. The box also had a small scale and a paper label written in French. My friend sent pictures to Ivor Noel Hume in Colonial Williamsburg who identified it as a coin weight set and the maker as operating in Paris starting in 1749 until ?. Unfortunately I can't find my copy of Hume's response, and my friends wife can't find the scale now ???

The next one I just found this spring at a Circa 1800 home site. I don't have much information on it, but believe it to be an Apothecary weight.

Steve, Heres the couple i found

I dug the big round one and tossed it aside, my friends convincing me that it was a "furniture coaster", then I noticed one A guy had at a gun show, who detected alot in the U.K. Didnt have mine to show him, and never found out much about it. Theres a ''GR'' stamped on it, and Im thinking a King George approved it.found at a 1790s house. Not sure if its a coin weight or a trade weight. the other Im thinking is an apothecary weight, never found out much about it or how to decipher the symbols on it. found it at a union camp. I really like the ones you dug, an I guess they are kind of a rare dig in the states. thanks an happy hunting Snaps

Ive dug three total. the third was a little chicklet-size brass an said "1Dram" on it. Gave that one to my brother who uses it as part of a display in his history class. i got it the first year I got into detecting, but none of my hunting buddies have found one. Of course theyve got plenty of stuff Ive never dug....

Thanks for posting! I am not an authority whatsoever on these weights, but there are a few people on this forum who have dug quite a few and are pretty knowledgeable. Hopefully they will chime in on yours.

Found two this weekend. Almost as good a find as colonial silver because when you find these there is probably colonial silver nearby

Here are my favorite two. the coin weight is French. I think it weighs 1.4 grams, and it could date back to the 16th century according to the Colchester website.
The larger lead one weighs exactly a quarter pound, it has an eagle with a date on it. Looks like 1838 or 9. I believe it is a trade weight.

This one is aa William III with sword and Ewer. Sword meaning it was made in London and Ewer was the London Foundry stamp approving the weight. So cool!
