Has to be worth at least a couple hundred dollars, even in the condition it is! One of the biggest small cent key dates! Congrats, I have only found a few IHCs, and only common dates, none after 1872 for some reason though. I couldn't imagine finding an 1877 ever!

It was not me that found it, but it is a find of a lifetime. A coded K.G.C. letter.

the letter from B.L. Few.jpg

It was found in a wire top glass jar under the scales on the foot of Nebraska Chief Justice Danial Gant's Marker. It is also a Compass point made by Julius Sterling Morton who had Gant dug up and relocated there.

Second only to the 1909s, in mintage for the IHP.
Congratulations on a key date.

I was reading all these congratulatory replies, wondering "You people sure are nice, but an Indian Head penny from New Jersey shouldn't be all that big a deal!". Until I looked up that year:

Circulation strikes: 852,500

Wow!! I get it, now.

I think a 1916 D Merc would also be a great find no matter how long an area has been settled. Gotta love them key date low mintage coins.
